Question: why only large videos?

just curious...

most videos posted here and in other places are the x720 versions.

why is it so seldom that smaller versions are posted? some people have bandwidth or harddrive limitations that would make these versions more sensible.

cheers

(mods: if this is the wrong forum, please move it to the appropriate one.)

I think it is a combination of downloaders wanting high quality videos (like myself!) and uploaders looking to make as much $$$ as possible.

added to that is that a lot of pro companies now only make 720 or higher, meaning that the video would need to be processed into a smaller resolution after the initial download .. and that would take extra time in the rush to upload

With the new (more or less) resolutions of most screens bigger files are necessary, otherwise they're no joy to watch.

hmm, not sure. I don't watch the files I download here on my telly, but I do watch TV shows I download, and all of them are around 480. No problem on my rather big screen...

The physical size of a screen has nothing to do with the resolution it is using. Those are two different things.

A picture is constructed out of dots.

Old TVs had a resolution of 640x420p, the VHS was even less: half of it. Which means: the TV picture had 268.800 dots.

Then came the DVD with a resoution of 720x540p.
Modern high resolution (hdtv) TVs have a resoution of 1080x720p, some even higher.
Those are 777.600 dots, which are considerably more dots than 268.000 Those extra dots need megabytes.

Ten years ago my old computer monitor (CRT display) had a resolution of 1020x720p. My actual one has a resolution of 1920x1080p (1024 if you have a 4/3 monitor).

This is a new standard that simply demands higher file sizes. If you look at pictures that filled the whole screen on your old CRT display, they're rather tiny now and look rather poor.

And of course those videos are prepared for new equipment, not old TVs. You have the same with standard TV shows, who get remastered so people can enjoy them again.

Because: if you watch a movie with the resolution of 640x420 on a 1080x720 screen, it looks terrible. You can acutally see the dots, the picture is blurry and the movements are all cropped etc.

(and as for limited hard-drive: you can always buy an external harddrive, they're not that expensive any more).

I used to post two types of resolution for videos of some sites.
When I only posted the 480p or 540p some users complained that they wanted the 720p version.

So, IMHO, the reasons to cause this are:

- Uploaders decide to post a file that has quality but isn't that big (1080p videos weigh way more).
Also, posting different resolutions may require more time for posters.

- Other members post what the original uploader has posted, so you will see the same 720p version posted by 10+ members.
