Appreciate this timely reminder above. Reminds me much of Schubert’s 9th symphony. We seldom hear Rimsky-Korsakov except through his Flight of the Bumble Bee and to a much lesser degree Scheherazade, the former being a bane for beginning musicians. Woody Allen once joked that his dad blew his liver through a bassoon trying to play it.

I grew up steeped in Spanish music and literature but when I see swirling Spanish dancers I think of the non-Spaniards who seemed to have grasped the immediate charm of the Spanish spirit in their compositions: Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, Georges Bizet’s Habanera. I wonder if Pablo de Sarasate’s violin playing ever influenced them all:
