Rome mayor defiantly registers 16 gay marriages

ROME (AP) — The gay marriage debate arrived within walking distance of the Vatican on Saturday as Rome's mayor defied Italy's government and registered 16 gay marriages celebrated abroad.

Gay marriage is illegal in Italy. Interior Minister Angelino Alfano recently sent a notice to local prefects saying any registrations of foreign gay marriages would be voided, and Rome's prefect vowed to do so immediately.

Nevertheless, Mayor Ignazio Marino received thunderous applause upon arrival at the city hall reception room where the couples and their loved ones gathered to make the marriages official in Rome's city ledger. Marino transcribed the date and locations of their weddings, including in Spain, Portugal and the U.S.

Marino said Saturday was an important day in the fight for equal rights and that "the most important right is to say to your companion 'I love you' and to have that be recognized."

Outside, a few protesters held up signs saying "Stop Marino" and "Transcriptions don't make families." Police said they blocked about 70 right-wing protesters who didn't have a permit.

Jonathon Dominic Spada, 26, from Santa Barbara, California, and Fabrizio Maffeo, 35, a Roman computer specialist, were there to register their 2013 marriage in Boston.

"It's important — a limited recognition, but it's something," Maffeo said. "I'm proud of our mayor."

The next step, he said, was for Italy to change its law to allow gay marriage and gay adoption.

Premier Matteo Renzi has said he would propose legislation allowing gay unions, though it's not expected to include adoption.

The Italian bishops' conference said it was "unacceptable" that Marino registered the weddings the same day Catholic bishops were wrapping up a two-week summit aiming to reinforce traditional Catholic family values.

In a statement, the bishops insisted marriage was between a man and woman.

THanks for sharing.

Reading the last paragraph what strikes me is that the only thing that is "unacceptable" is that the Bishops think they can tell the civil government what to do!

They might pay more attention to what some guy called Jeasus said on the separation of church and state:

Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's

Bishops who actually believe in Jesus should let the state get on with recognising gay marriage, and run their churches as they see fit.

Dear GB I see that you know little about my country. Here in Italy not move a leaf stirs without the approval of the Church of Rome has always been so and it will be much longer.

Here in Italy are more decisive the bishops of the Pope. Seat Vatican is in Rome, but the dioceses are scattered throughout the territory.

During the Second World War the church was allied with the Nazis. After the war he protected and did flee secretly into exile in South America many Nazi leaders.

This "Santa" institution is colluding with the Mafia, so much so that when religious processions pass in front of the homes of Mafia Boss, bowing in front of their homes.

Do not give credit to "Pinocchio" Renzi. It only propaganza election. In fact he, as was his father, a member of the former Christian Democrats, a party that disappeared after the scandal "Tangentopoli" (one of many, unfortunately in Italian), but have still strong and powerful men in the institutions, the which are linked to the Vatican.

I remind everyone that the Vatican,in addition to treasures and works of art of inestimable value, is in possession of most of the real estate and land of Italy.

It has a bank, "IOR" which came in almost all the financial scandals and even more. In particular specializes in ricliclaggio of "dirty" money.

In spite of this, the Italian government is supporting a incredible expense for the maintenance of the Church.

The updated estimate of the annual costs of the Church is:

€ 6.467.307.772

Do you really think that the priests give up everything this?

€6.5 billion Euros = $8.5 billion U.S. Dollars

Why are the Italian taxpayers paying such ludicrous ransom money to the most powerful and richest cult in the world?

Is Mayor Marino 'connected' with the Mafia also?

This is interesting political information about Italy. I don't hear very much about Italian politics so please elaborate more on the ransom and corruption.

Thanks bigsal and gb :)

has more than twenty years that Italy is under the Berlusconi era, controlling all the press and television.
With the entry of Renzi at the head of the government, things have remained unchanged, because in fact Renzi is allied with Berlusconi. This has been possible thanks to a secret pact between Renzi and Berlusconi: the famous "Pact of the Nazarene."

With this pact Berlusconi, who has been sentenced by a final tax fraud to the detriment of the Italian State, has secured over immunity also the continuity of its dirty business, and also those of his many friends. Pact "blessed" by the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano, the Italian patron saint of the caste.

Did you know Napolitano, this despicable man, has applauded the invasion of Russian tanks in 1956 in Hungary. What that has forced Hungary for 40 years to undergo the communist dictatorship.
In addition, this shady character, was for many years the European Parliament, gaining money on expenses. Here is a video that can clarify:

(Initially the video commentary in German with subtitles in Italian, but then the interview of the German reporter is in the English language)

Think who this unscrupulous swindler is the President of the Republic. Obviously he is part of the Democratic Party as Renzi.

Also the Mayor Marino is of the Democratic Party, the same of Renzi and Napolitano. I do not know whether or not in collusion with the Mafia, but just the fact of sharing in the same party where there are so many suspects and offenders, does come right in the mafia system. (and I'm not talking about the negotiation state-Mafia, which is also involved Napolitano, otherwise you do not get out more)

Inside the camp of the governing majority, is there any honest politician, but unfortunately they do nothing to counter the rampant corruption that is in Italy.

If the righteous are not opposed, they are already guilty.

From the few English words and text overlays there were it seems there is some controversy about how much he paid to fly from Brussels to Rome? Was that the gist of this news story?

German, Italian and a little English for seasoning makes for a complicated bouquet :)

Politicians never change. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely...

Yes dear Sniffit - that was the gist of this story. The reporter repeatedly asked him if he has taken tax money for his own through these flights. He jangled back that he only is responsible for the Italian tax-payers. The reporter said: But Germans pay as well taxes he has taken. His answer was that he will call the security if he further will ask him such impolite questions.
A nice man in our European Parliament.

Obviously, the video is old and refers to when Napolitano was an MEP.

Then it was discovered that he was not alone in practicing this "trick" to supplement the already lavish stipend.

The serious thing is that even the media are subservient to political power. Before, the reporters were guard dogs, ready to denounce these robberies.
Today they have become dogs living room and accompaniment, no longer feels awkward question, only questions of convenience to please the political shift.
