INTERNET giant Google has announced it is now paying its gay and lesbian staff more than its heterosexual employees in the US.

The search engine is compensating same-sex partners for the higher taxes they pay on domestic partners health benefits.

The company said in its blog today that it would be grossing-up imputed taxes on health insurance benefits for all same-sex domestic partners in the US.

Same-sex couples who include domestic partners on their health insurance pay federal taxes. Married couples do not have to pay taxes on spousal health benefits.

Google is not offering any extra pay to heterosexual domestic partners, because the company said heterosexual employees have the option of avoiding the tax by getting married.

Daryl Herrschaft, director of the Workplace Project at Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights advocacy group, said Google's policy was a step in the right direction.

Well I'm glad so company is moving towards the right direction. Though I also love the grounds that Google has for its employees in the U.S. If I could get the same pay equivalent and lifestyle as I have in AL and job safety I so would be glad to move if I knew I was getting a job with Google and all their benefits and things.

A very interesting move - it certainly shines a spotlight on why civil partnerships/marriages are needed.

I bet this will turn the right wing in the state apoplectic with rage - they may even try to sue Google for discrimination, which would really bring the whole issue to the fore. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I'm not quite sure I agree with their point of view here. They don't compensate straight couples since they can get their compensation if they get married? What if they don't want to? As much as I love hearing about victories when it comes to gays and lesbians gaining their equal place in this world, this is nothing like equality here. Google should give an example and treat everybody equally without any other implication on their part. If they really want to help, they should provide ressources to help the battle for equality instead of doing that kind of inequity themselves.

I disagree. Making the commitment to get married is supposed to bring with it responsibilities and benefits. Every straight couple have the right to get married in front of the law, and hence take on those responsibilities and benefits. Not choosing to do so is an informed choice, and has consequences. I'm not in any way talking religious marriage here, just marriage in the eyes of the law. There is no earthly reason for any straight couple to expect to be treated as a couple if they refuse to register that relationship legally. Gay people do not have that choice, they cannot get the government to recognise their union, as it should, so Google are taking the step of making that recognition.

Straight people loose NOTHING - gay people gain equality. No one looses, there is no less equality in the world, just more.

Gays are more intelligent, more charming, more artistic, more dedicated; it is about time this is recognized and rewarded. Been out at work, manage a warehouse with 95% of staff is straight, worked my way up and left the rest in the dust. Never a comment to my face, helps being 6'3" 190 and having a fuck-you attitude.

It is because Gays are more than straight guys. They continue to multiply in counts. :D
