Now your probably thinking I'm going to say like your a valued member of society which you are but everyone probably tells you that already. You might feel like your trapped in your own mind a prisoner of sorts. Talking to people is the best thing you can do. People can't and won't help if they don't know theirs a problem. People might say harsh things or pretend like they don't care but if they don't know whats really going on then they can't have any idea that what there saying is hurtful. Counseling can be expensive yes but there are services in your area for free counseling at least in the United States. The answer isn't finding something to prevent you from committing suicide although that's important finding the reasons that you feel this way to begin with and trying to address those issues can be very helpful. Even if you think that you don't have anyone that's not true you always have someone and that's yourself. Everyone has dreams goals I want to find a boyfriend etc.. Think about those things and don't stop if you talk to someone there is a away. There is always a way out no mater how dark the tunnel is. I can't say I know what your going through no one can but your not the only one who has felt like committing suicide. As someone who constantly fights for himself and who has fought to protect a friend right there in her own living room even with knives in her hand I know it can be difficult beyond anyone else's imagination.

Saying... If you ever need to talk isn't the best thing to say its not harmful just empty. you need to reach out ask them whats wrong don't leave whether they call you up to them you have to make the effort reach out to them. You can tell them you are always there to listen but 9 times out of 10 they won't call.

Some of the worst things you can say to a suicidal person.

Saying to someone "Just do it already" IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN SAY.

0. "What's *your* problem?"

1. "Will you stop that constant whining?
What makes you think that anyone cares?"

2. "Have you gotten tired yet of all this me-me-me stuff?"

3. "You just need to give yourself a kick in the rear."

4. "But it's all in your mind."

5. "I thought you were stronger than that."

6. "No one ever said life was fair."

7. "As you get stronger you won't have to wallow in it as much."

8. "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps."

9. "Do you feel better now?"
(Usually said following a five minute conversation in which the
speaker has asked me "what's wrong?" and "would you like to talk
about it?" with the best of intentions, but absolutely no under-
standing of depression as anything but an irrational sadness.)

10. "Why don't you just grow up?"

11. "Stop feeling sorry for yourself."

12. "There are a lot of people worse off than you?"

13. "You have it so good, why aren't you happy?"

14. "It's a beautiful day!"

15. "You have so many things to be thankful for, why are you depressed!"

16. "What do you have to be depressed about".

17. "Happiness is a choice"

18. "You think *you've* got problems..."

19. "Well at least it's not that bad."

20. "Maybe you should take vitamins for your stress."

21. "There is always somebody worse off than you are."

22. "Lighten up!"

23. "You should get off all those pills."

24. "You are what you think."

25. "Cheer up!"

26. "You're always feeling sorry for yourself."

27. "Why can't you just be normal?"

28. "Things aren't *that* bad, are they?"

29. "Have you been praying/reading the Bible?"

30. "You need to get out more."

31. "We have to get together some time." [Yeah, right!]

32. "Get a grip!"

33. "Most folks are about as happy as they make up their
minds to be."

34. "Take a hot bath. That's what I always do when I'm upset."

35. "Well, everyone gets depressed sometimes!"

36. "Get a job!"

37. "Smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone."

38. "You don't *look* depressed!"

39. "You're so selfish!"

40. "You never think of anyone but yourself."

41. "You're just looking for attention."

42. "Have you got PMS?"

43. "You'll be a better person because of it!"

44. "Everybody has a bad day now and then."

45. "You should buy nicer clothes to wear."

46. "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

47. "Why don't you smile more?"

48. "A person your age should be having the time of your life."

49. "The only one you're hurting is yourself."

50. "You can do anything you want if you just set your mind to it."

51. "This is a place of BUSINESS, not a HOSPITAL"
--> after confiding to supervisor about my depression

52. "Depression is a symptom of your sin against God."

53. "You brought it on yourself"

54. "You can make the choice for depression and its effects, or
against depression, it's all in YOUR hands."

55. "Get off your rear and do something." -or- "Just do it!"

56. "Why should I care?"

57. "Snap out of it, will you?"

58. "You *want* to feel this way."

59. "You have no reason to feel this way."

60. "Its your own fault."

61. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

62. "You're always worried about *your* problems."

63. "Your problems aren't that big."

64. "What are you worried about? You should be fine."

65. "Just don't think about it."

66. "Go Away."

67. "You don't have the ability to do it."

68. "Just wait a few weeks, it'll be over soon."

69. "Go out and have some fun!"

70. "You're making me depressed as well..."

71. "I just want to help you."

72. "The world out there is not that bad..."

73. "Just try a little harder!"

74. "Believe me, I know how you feel. I was depressed once for several days."

75. "You need a boy/girl-friend."

76. "You need a hobby."

77. "Just pull yourself together"

78. "You'd feel better if you went to church"

79. "I think your depression is a way of punishing us." ---My mother

80. "Sh*t or get off the pot."

81. "So, you're depressed. Aren't you always?"

82. "What you need is some real tragedy in your life to give you perspective."

83. "You're a writer, aren't you? Just think of all the good material
you're getting out of this."

84. This one is best executed with an evangelical-style handshake,i.e. one
of my hands is imprisoned by two belonging to a beefy person who thinks he
has a lot more charisma than I do: "Our thoughts and prayers are with
you." This has actually happened to me. Bitten-back response: "Who are
'our'? And don't do me any favors, schmuck."

85. "Have you tried camomile tea?"

86. "So, you're depressed. Aren't you always?"

87. "You will be ok, just hang in there, it will pass."
"This too shall pass." - Ann Landers

88. "Oh, perk up!"

89. "Try not being so depressed."

90. "Quit whining. Go out and help people and you won't have
time to brood..."

91. "Go out and get some fresh air... that always makes me feel better."

92. "You have to take up your bed and carry on."

93. "Why don't you give up going to these quacks (ie doctors) and throw out
those pills, then you'll feel better."

94. "Well, we all have our cross to bear."

95. "You should join band or chorus or something. That way
you won't be thinking about yourself so much."

96. "You change your mind."

97. "You're useless."

98. "Nobody is responsible for your depression."

99. "You don't like feeling that way? So, change it."

Suicide Warning Signs:

* Appearing depressed or sad most of the time.
(Untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.)

* Talking or writing about death or suicide.

* Withdrawing from family and friends.

* Feeling hopeless.

* Feeling helpless.

* Feeling strong anger or rage.

* Feeling trapped -- like there is no way out of a situation.

* Experiencing dramatic mood changes.

* Abusing drugs or alcohol.

* Exhibiting a change in personality.

* Acting impulsively.

* Losing interest in most activities.

* Experiencing a change in sleeping habits.

* Experiencing a change in eating habits.

* Losing interest in most activities.

* Performing poorly at work or in school.

* Giving away prized possessions.

* Writing a will.

* Feeling excessive guilt or shame.

* Acting recklessly.

It should be noted that some people who die by suicide do not show any suicide warning signs.

But about 75 percent of those who die by suicide do exhibit some suicide warning signs, so we need to be aware of what the suicide warning signs are and try to spot them in people. If we do see someone exhibiting suicide warning signs, we need to do everything that we can to help them.

If you or someone you know exhibits several of the suicide warning signs listed above, immediate action is required, so please read the information on the home page of this website and take action.

Always take suicide warning signs seriously.

Thank you,

This information is from 2005 but it gives you an idea.

If you think someone may be suicidal DO NOT STOP TALKING TO THEM AT ALL COST. Call 911 if you know them well enough to feel comfortable doing so and go visit them if its possible.

I... really dont know what to say... really good post, great idea and intent, I assume some of our in-closet members might have even considered it afraid of the outcome, so it's always good to lend them some help, even if we cant do it ourselves. The "what not to say" part is good too... specially since I'm the type that thinks "if he really wanted to he'd done it already, it's just a show" while trying to help(I dunno why, I just deal terribly with suicidals>.<)... that being said, that freaked me out man!

I've had people tell me just do it already it doesn't help. If you tell someone that I give them 1/2 hour.

Some of this may be hard to read but it needs to be read. It needs to be talked about. 32,000 people committed suicide in 2005. Suicide isn't just the death of a person It happened for a reason. other people blame them selves families are hugely impacted. We can't look the other way otherwise we will be looking at a body bag.

Lol I'd never said just do it, only wondered quietly... if the person didnt care and didnt want to live anymore... why come to me? I felt like it was a show for attention or a try to make my cry b4 going, which is not fair... and why I just cant cry anymore when someone says that to me actually... after the third personsaid that, I think I just went weird about it...

That's understandable. I'm not saying you would say that just mentioning that I've been told that before and it doesn't help. Just saying be careful what you say if someone tell you there suicidal.

thanks josh for the info, ill have to come back to this thread later and look harder at it:) dont have time right now:( but its most important to listen to the person and not offer to much advice till you hear them out fully, as i have tryed suicide once and thought about it often:( its a tricky thing, but i know that a few ppl here saved me from a second attempt becouse they cared and wanted to help:) they called 911 on me, but as i thought about it and was mad at first it did save me from an attempt. i am greatful now:) i hope this thread will help someone:) lol

I appreciate the list of things not to say--too many insensitive moralists will want to censor other people when they talk about their feelings by using phrases like that, and it doesn't help, at all. You should listen, and not try to give "advice."

I understand the good idea in the post but my philosophy has always been, that you can kill yourself, but don't ever kill anyone else. I think that person can decide ones own life and if one wants to end it, I think that its ones decision.
Ofcourse on the other hand I would try to stop someone else from killing himself... this post has made me think my philosophy again....

You have to think about it does to families. Yes it is there own bodies but just beacuase someones life isn't right we let them hurt them selves. IFAD can fix what's cuasing them to feel this way. There life could be great who knows they could have a great bf or gf great job. We have to help them reach there potential to help them be happy.Things can wait will get better. We have to let them explore the possibilitie.

I plan to add to this with impotant information to hopefully build a resourse list. Not just a topic of conversation. Some people not pointing out anyone on the forum don't take this seriously like a person I know. She thinks I'm a winney ahole and that I should shutup already. That I act like I'm the only one with problems. These kind of words are very damiging to a person very distructive. If anyone can think of any thing I don't have let me know.

If anything I think u're just adorable, even with ur issues u still manage to care and compile a help list for others, I already like u for free so dont care about others say, yeah every1 have problems, but the issue's how each one react or feel the damage, that's something no one can control. That person cant say that cuz she doesnt know how u feel...

But if someone is not depressed, just been bored(or in great pain, agony etc.) to all in this world for a longer time, I think one can kill himself. No reason to live here only for others (family etc.). Towards death we all go and if someone wants to leave early, then thats ones own decision. One of my close friend has killed himself and I can understand why. I can't blame him for that even though I miss him. His parents (and everyone else close) were in grief ofcourse but it would have been grimm to see him just hang on here for us knowing the reasons for his suicide... Rest in peace literally.

I love the fact that you used adorable :) makes me smile. That is why I'm writing this stuff so people don't have to go through what I go through. So they can get help or so someone can learn how to help others.

If someone is terminally ill and theirs nothing they can do okay then yes I could understand but beyond that I think the if someone feels this way then they have big issues in their life and they need help and if they don't want help then its a sign that they have given up hope. I think at that point someone needs to step in and help out a family member or friend maybe. The fact that you used "Bored" I mean if someone is doing it for that reason I still think there's something hurting them. The term bothers me.

I never said bored  if someone's bored with their own life is more than a reason to think outside the box, and how to start over, even if it means to leave everything behind, but yeah, I DO think you're adorable, dunno why... just seems to hit it on the right spot, you know? Dunno how to explain properly, so it'll probably sound weird xD... "the cuddle and lets talk for hours" feel kinda comes from you... You're probably really good to have around... too weird? xD

Oops I'm sorry I so mistyped big time. Sorry for the confusion. I edited the post. and no that's not weird its a complement thank you. I mean I've thought of my self of goofy, blunt, and maybe talkative. I like adorable like one of those huge teddy bears you win as a prize.

Thank you so much for this thread. It is great to see you caring for others, and sad to hear that some have not been so helpful when you were in need. I have chatted with a couple of people who were thinking about suicide, including chatting with someone as they sat on the bridge getting ready to jump. I think to most powerful thing we can do in this world is to listen to other. To really listen, to hear their pain. The only reason that young person walked away that night was because someone on the other side of the world actually listened and cared. Thank you so much. And please everyone, don't do it alone. There are people out there to listen.
