First Gay Couple In Boston Police Force

Just a few days after the city of Boston celebrated its 45th Annual Gay Pride parade, the Boston Police Academy celebrated another first. According to the Boston Herald Thursday, the academy graduated 64 recruits on Wednesday (June 17) and amongst them was the program’s first openly gay couple.

Graduates Jimmy Moccia and his partner and fellow classmate, Shawn MacIver, went through the very intense six-month program together with the ultimate goal being to provide an uplifting service to the community. As the academy’s first gay couple, Moccia said that they are both “very proud” to be a part of a historic moment, but serving the community is their main emphasis.

“We just want to get back to our community and, you know, uplift everyone in our community,” Moccia said Tuesday before the ceremony via the Boston Herald.

Among those in attendance to welcome all the new cadets were Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans, Police Academy Superintendent Lisa R. Holmes and Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. Walsh congratulated the 64 new officers by telling them they are all “going to make a difference.”

Moccia and MacIver have been together for five years and both scored 100 on their civil service tests. Their performance in the academy more than proved they were amongst the best. They did so without hiding whom they are, but do not want to be referred to as “the gay Cops.” Moccia told the Herald that they were hesitant at first to be open about their sexuality and relationship because they wanted people to get to know them first, but decided being open was the best way to show that there was no fear in being who they are.
