Citroën 2 CV AZL : "luxurious" version then basic model in the 2 CV range


2 CV AZL presented in 1956 has a top of synthetic fabric, an enlarged rear window and some stick trims here and there.

The original tubular wheel assembled until 1970 on the 2 CV AZL


Among the 4 versions A, AZ, AZL and AZLP (1958), the last one is from far the most ordered. (P for "porte de malle", trunk door in English)

New bonnet in 1961, electric dashboard for the model 63 (electric windscreen wiper and fuel gauge). I describe the 2CV made in Levallois near Paris. Slough (England) and Forest (Belgium) models were often in advance on the French cars because of the stronger competition of numerous constructors.

In 1965, the front doors open at last in the right direction and a third lateral window is added for the model 66.

This little thing of plastic can save the passengers elbow (1967) ;)

So as to protect the market of the new Dyane, only 2 CV AZL remain at the catalog 1968. (model AZAM deleted)

2 CV AZL at Paris Motorshow 1969 for the last time.

Spring 1970, a second career is beginning for the 2 CV with 2 CV 4 and 2 CV 6 powered by the Dyane 4 or Dyane 6 modern flat-twin. Exterior look is like the one of 2 CV AZL.

The Talbot Lago cost 2.775.000 F compared with 630.000 F for one Citroën Traction 11BL.

In 1956 Facel Vega FV2 or FVS is definitely the most performing and the most expensive French car, exported at 75%.
Failure marketing, Talbot leaves the Lago Grand Sport model in 1955 for a smaller coupé 2.5 liter that is one simple reduction of the beautiful Grand Sport. Talbot bought by Simca in 1958, the coupé 2.5 liter finish sadly its career with a lateral V8 Simca Vedette under the bonnet! It is the end of a glorious constructor.

Some low cost Peugeot



Going from 203 to 403, it is not obvious for everybody.

203 mechanical.
On the right, the differential with wheel and screw without end, a Peugeot tradition for the Quadrilette 1920 until the last 404 in 1975. The driving shaft is locked up inside a pushing tube.

Early 1960, Peugeot must liberate some assembling chains for the future 404 and he decides to stop the old but successful 203. Then he creates 403/7, not a 403 with 203 engine, but a 403 with the cylinder of a 203. Marketing success, 403/7 will be the last manufactured 403 in 1966.

403 mechanical is like the 203 one.


Some years later, same operation with the 404/8, a 404 with the cylinder of a 403.

The tilted engine allow the 404 plunging bonnet. Front suspension Mac Pherson for the first time at Peugeot.

"Why the 404/8 ?" asked this journalist disappointed by the low market 404.
Poor equipment and high gas consumption, the 404/8 is made during only 2 years.

504 L is derived from 504 Commercial (engine of the first 504 and rigid rear axle) :(

There is not really cheap 505, the GR version is a model among the others.
The carburettor engine is the one of 504. Last motor rear axle Peugeot car.
