Hawaii is one of my favoritest places on the planet. Every year, my husband and I go there, especially to see the sunrise at Mount Haleakala.

The journey to the other side of the island is a couple of hours long, so we leave our hotel or friends' house around 2am. Then, the road up the mountain is long and arduous, so you have to stop at the small general store at the base of the mountain for gas, coffee, and breakfast.

A few hours later, you arrive at the top and get out of your car and park, snuggling under the blankets you have brought with you because it is so cold.

As the luminous sun begins its rise across the horizon, a hush falls over the crowd.

It's always a delight to take in the reactions of first-timers.

Beside the sunsets in Naples, Florida where we live (and people never fail to gather on the beach to applaud the magnificent sunset), these sunrises at Mounta Haleakala are the most spectacular we've seen.
