I'm out of my depth now, I knew nothing of that.
How great do you think is the role of faith here? I tend to the view that the church makes use of talent that is already there. An exploiter rather than a catalyst.
In order to have cathedral organs there must be cathedrals. But the king of instruments also lives in secular venues. That he speaks with more majesty in his original consecrated home is down to the architecture.

Bach’s faith? Difficult to say. As you know, many view history through inescapably modern eyes. Likewise, many Bach lovers fashion (or refashion) his motives according to their own religio-philosophical bent. I’d be afraid to argue either way without causing controversy. There’s evidence for both sides, though I’m no expert on it.

Bach’s life (1685-1750) did coincide with the emergence and zenith of Pietism within Lutheranism. The piety in his texts and music is obvious, as are a few religious marks (e.g., “help me, Jesus”) in his hand found on some of his manuscripts. Conversely, his letters are sometimes so obsequious that one can only assume that religious conformity was not just an option in those days; it was required. Plus music is often seen as the “universal language.” If you cannot stand Christian literalism---as many cannot these days (I among them)---viewing Bach’s music as “cosmic” helps a little, feeble as that may sound.

Regarding venue, and along the same lines, many modern organists simply tolerate churchianity b.s. to get at the organs. Unless you're fabulously wealthy and can afford a $500,000 instrument in your mansion (if you have one), there’s simply no other access to a pipe organ of any size for most organists. Thus, the attempts at philosophical “compromise” that result can be extremely frustrating, if not downright soul-crushing.

Were such wrenching compromises required during Bach’s time? Possibly. He had his unfair share of squabbles with church fathers. And as you so wisely pointed out, exploitation of musicians has been a major sport of the uppity-ups for centuries. Musicians are some of the biggest victims of all.

Add to all of that the gay issue within a religiously bigoted context and you’ve got an atmosphere so toxic that the pipe organ is only barely worth all the trouble. Learning the flute instead would probably be a lot easier and a lot less aggrieving. Probably a lot less fun too, however. But at least you can carry it with you and you won’t have to grovel before total hypocrites.

I’m all for moving the pipe organ into secular venues. Perhaps the Internet can help. Many sounds from many of the great instruments have been sampled and preserved, with more to come as technology advances. New composers can exploit these sounds, while listeners can enjoy them in their own private philosophical spaces.

Like many supernaturally successful artists (the Beatles come to mind), Bach was the right person born in the right place at the right time. Music had been in his blood for generations, underwriting his great talent almost as much as Leopold’s underwrote Wolfgang’s. Bach’s family spawned and nurtured his gift.

Then there was the place---Germany, where, 150 years prior to Bach, Luther had established music as part of the elementary curriculum along with language and math. That is why so many great composers are German.

Finally, the time was fairly peaceful. Bach was born 50 years after the Thirty Years’ War and died almost 3 decades before the French Revolution. So there were no major upheavals that affected Germany during his life, except for some minor Prussian “adventures” here and there. In the Capriccio upon the Departure of the Beloved Brother, for example, the motive behind the departure was to fight for or against the Poles or something like that.

It's such a waste for a magnificent instrument to live in the house of the over-rich. Like the vintage Ferrari in the garage and the bowling alley in the basement, it just becomes an unappreciated underused toy. Nobody lives in a house big enough to allow a sixteen foot stop to speak fully. The piano is more versatile, the player has so much more control over the ADSR to make the sound fit the room. As you have demonstrated above, organ to piano translations can work wonderfuly. It's harder to go the other way round. The organist only has the swell for dynamics, and too much swelling gives you that treacley Wurlitzer sound. With electronics and sampling, anything is possible. Driverless cars, jobless towns, electronic food, electronic sex. Welcome to the future.

The future

A young talent (Benedikt Woll) on a sample set of the Silbermann orgel at Arlesheim. The reed in the fugue is sumptuous.

This is where he’s really playing:

The future is definitely here. There’s nothing more secular than the comfort of your own home. Wonderful practice instrument.

There are a lot of advantages for the player with such an electronic console. No religious gobshite to listen to, no mice or moths living inside it. A consistent keyweight that dosen't wear out your fingers, no confusing time delays, unless you want them. I love the way they've captured the growl. Whatever they call that stop, it's GRRRRRRRreat.
Sampling must be the future of porn too. Record, by some means not yet invented, every possible erotic sensation, in the way that a virtual organ contains every possile sound that the donor organ could make. Add a MIDI track to your porn and play back the sensations. No need to watch the screen, just feel it.

I read somewhere on GH that advanced, affordable CGI would likely be abetting the porn industry before too long. That will mean more jobs lost for humans. But who cares? If advanced, realistic, easily and quickly rendered animation winnows out all the butt-ugly mediocrities currently in porn, that will be fantastic, imo. Those guys aren’t making any money anyway. Only the stars (like Johnny Vapid and Will Braun, the amazing bespectacled hunk) are raking it in.

On YouTube, I watched a vid that showed how advanced the replication of human skin is becoming in computer graphics. The days of overly smooth, unrealistic skin are almost over, which will represent a major leap in quality and believability (i.e., realism).

Regarding content, the sky’s already the limit for gay cartoons. Eventually, the same will be true for ultra-realistic animation, which will probably solve one of my major gripes---the formulaic lack of imagination among porn producers.

With ultra-realistic animation, there’ll be no need to hire uggos anymore or Adonises either, though I’m sure there will still be a large market for the latter. But animators certainly won’t need them to create popular porn that may well become as lucrative as the other genres---that is, if any of them are still “lucrative” anymore.

Also, it’s not always the case that porn producers are merely devoid of imagination. In all probability, most of their models simply cannot DO the things a lot of us would like to see---you know, like keep a hardon going for more than a few minutes, or even GET a hardon in the first place without obscuring their cocks with their anxious hands the whole time.

SUPER gorgeous, ultra-realistic animated characters will be able to do anything and everything their animators conjure in their sex-crazed fantasies. Can’t wait!

Likewise, when realistic, affordable, customized sex robots become available, I’m right there---first in line!

I’ll promptly submit pics of my favorite unrequited love (you know the one I mean---the one that hurt the most) then sit and wait for my customized robot sex slave to arrive!

There's not much that hasn't been thought of before.
In this 1968 movie, the sinister organist tries to play a tune on the girl
which will kill her with an overload of erotic sensations. But Jane Fonda
is too tough for him, instead the organ overheats and catches fire.

Which is what has sometimes happend in real life at performances of
Ligeti's bad boy noise composition Volumina. It does overload the organ,
so it is hard to find a venue which will permit it to be played.

Total stud

This guy is a tour de force. I wanted to hug him after he played all this music by Bach, mostly infrequently heard miscellaneous works that show off the composer’s youthful energy and virtuosity. When was the last time you heard a crowd go this nuts after a harpsichord concert? I daresay never.

Everything on this channel (Aunt Polly) is well worth a listen. I’ve never heard so many fantastic harpsichordists, many of them quite young. All on lush historic instruments.
