File Sizes are becoming Ridiculous

I look at the file sizes of clips etc. to download and just give up in despair.
Their resolution is so great they could be played on a big screen - yet we are viewing them on much smaller devices.
There are a huge range of Download Sites on this and other sites you cannot join them all.
Certain download sites like Rapidgator are so unstable in free mode that they "bomb out" and others are so slow they "bomb out" after 12 hours.
I have given up on certain offerings here because they are just too large and search for it in smaller version elsewhere.
I really appreciate the effort people make in making these items available -but have to go elsewhere when I know they are available.
Still enjoy visiting here - so all is not lost

Yes, its unfortunate that some studios now only seem to release in "Ultra-720/1080p" format, which for most of us is overkill (I don't need to see the roid pimples that clearly, thanks....).

Even if you have a premium account for quick downloading, the relentless march toward 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 GB files sizes is impractical for storage, with some foolish studios now up to an insane 2.2 GB for a 20min clip. How incompetent are their techs? I can make a near-lossless 20min clip from a BluRay that comes in under 400GB.

The most annoying aspect of this is you typically gain nothing significant going from their normal 480 or 720 files to the huge "ultra" 720 or 1080 anyway. When viewed on my Sony or Samsung 32" and 40" HDTVs, the 500-800 Mb files are barely worse compared to the 1.2 - 2.2 Gb (some studios are up to 3+ Gb files-yikes). This is esp true with a couple of the biggest-name studios that insist on doing outdoor poolside-with-ferns scenes despite their cameras being hopelessly unable to capture outdoors properly (even in the huge 1080p files, outdoors segments are riddled with so much blockiness and pattern blur you can't recognize who is in the shot or what they're doing: what is the point of HD in such cases?).

A number of contributors (on all sites like this) have moved to posting exclusively in 1080p as a means of standing out and attracting a loyal following who demand nothing less than "true HD" and are willing to maintain multiple premium accounts (and hard drives) to download them. That is their right: after all, they are doing all the work and providing the files to us (many thanks, guys!). But I hope most will continue to offer smaller alternatives (where available) for those of us who need to be more practical.

So agree! I'm not watching even on a TV, and cheap as HDD space is, bandwidth in the US sucks!

Openload is super fast and usually reliable for porn files. Unfortunately when it comes to TV episodes and movies I find their files are often corrupted in some way (also they add redundant extensions like "video.mkv.mp4"). When they do have the proper file, Openload works great: as fast as Uploadable used to be (before they became BigFile-a complete scam).

MexaShare is as fast or faster than OpenLoad, but requires a three minute countdown, endless captchas and more browser hijack attempts than you can count. Still, given how few free hosts will let you download a gigabyte file in 14 minutes, MexaShare is worth a spin if you see links to them (and have solid malware protection like Norton installed).

Have you tried a download manager? With those you can resume Rapidgator downloads if they are interrupted.

I understand the appeal of Rapidgator, because files stay online for a really long time unless they are taken down for cpy right. So for a mega-thread and generally everything where people will go back to even after a year this is a reasonable choice.

I agree, it's very quick

I like the bigger sizes with their better clarity, but you are completely right about Rapidgator; no hope of securely downloading something above 50Mb in free mode without it bombing out and you having to wait hours to start again. I'd say the same of NitroFlare, although you may get 100MB before it bombs out and you have to wait a couple of hours to try again. There are lots of other pretty reliable free downloaders, though.

Yes, but is is in mostly due to people moving to high definition. I must confess I sometimes don't download something only because I am worried about disk space. I already have a very sizeable collection, going to over 30 TB, and I can't just carry on buying more and more hard drives.

I hate deleting what I have, but I guess I will have to start sooner of later, picking out files, but probably regret it later.

The only way currently more space opens up if when a hard drive finally fails altogether, and I replace it with a new blank one. I get upset about the lost files, as I only backup "favourites", but in a way, at least it opens up room for a new drive.

How do other people deal with this? Download less? Get bigger disks?

BTW... about the "bombing out" on free downloads.... openload does not do that, and if you use other hosting services, you need to change your IP for each part, to avoid waiting times. The simplest way to do that is to reboot your rooter.

Mine too. Aside from the inconvenience, the "reboot" trick doesn't always work to fool the file hosts with this type of router anyway. More often than you'd expect, it reboots to the same IP address it had before. Even if it does change to a new dynamic IP, some hosts like Rapidgator still somehow manage to detect its really you just trying to beat their system, and enforce their waiting period regardless.

There is a "reconnect" button on Jdownloader, which attempts to get a new IP, but it only works with SOME providers.
