Taking old World War II photos, Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov carefully photoshops them over more recent shots to make the past come alive. Not only do we get to experience places like Berlin, Prague, and Vienna in ways we could have never imagined, more importantly, we are able to appreciate our shared history in a whole new and unbelievably meaningful way.

What a marvelous collection of photographs golfdelta.

Well I did smoke "Salem" now and then in my teens...

Starting to smoke (not only cigarrettes but also pipe) in my teens are among the most stupid decisions in my life, and the decision to abruptly stop smoking on 4 April 2012 among the very best.

Magder's revolution started in 1978, long before Bob Rae's NDP provincial government permitted Sunday shopping in 1992. Magder says tourists were happy to find a place open on Thanksgiving weekend.

But the province wasn't – and it pursued fines and contempt charges as Magder remained open for hundreds of Sundays, racking up $514,000 in fines.
The Retail Business Holidays Act allowed exceptions for tourist areas, gas stations and convenience stores, and Magder was incensed by the unfairness of it.
His battle went to the Supreme Court of Canada, but it refused to hear the case for technical reasons. With legal bills and fines piling up, Magder had no resources left. The courts ruled against extending his bankruptcy protection, and the furrier closed his doors through the winter of 1993-94 – the kind of winter fur coats are made for.

"To go bankrupt for bad business is one thing, but for the government to put you out is another," he said. All told, Magder thinks he paid $20,000 in fines, but because of the bankruptcy, many of his unsecured creditors, including the government, were out of luck.

After Magder sold his assets and refinanced his life, the store returned in March 1994 as Glen & Paul Magder Furs.

"We lost a lot of customers. A lot of them were mad at me," Magder said. "Creditors who lost money were mad at me. They forgot all the money they made from me when times were good."

Collection agencies hounded Magder until a few years ago.

"They didn't realize the (original) company was bankrupt," said his son, Paul Jr. "It was a real raw nerve for my dad."

Nowadays, the Magders are contemplating a move from their spacious Spadina Ave. store.

"I thought eventually I'd have an American-style movie with a happy ending," the elder Magder said. "Unfortunately, I didn't get it."

Amsterdam during WWII

The photographer Michael Danckaarts of "LBI Netherlands", fused photos of the life of the Jews of Amsterdam during the Second World War with recent images of the city.
The work was done for the Museum 'Anne Frank House', today a symbol of the history of the Holocaust and the Second World War.
The images also include occupations of the streets by the soldiers and other historical events. These are some of them

Sean Flynn (see #451 above) was a student at Duke University for one year. During that time, the Duke Players presented a production of BORN YESTERDAY. Sean played
a bellboy; don't remember if he had any lines. It's the only time I was onstage with
a celebrity . . . or, at least, a celebrity's son.
