I'm a music junkie, but I have never heard for that kind of music.

The Oxford Dictionaries says: ''A type of popular Portuguese song, usually with a melancholy theme and accompanied by mandolins or guitars.''

Thanks for opening a NEW WORLD to me. ;)

I've heard plenty of songs of this style sung in Spanish, but I was unaware that Portugal had its own counterpart, though I suppose i shouldn't be surprised. Shows how much I know.

I did a year's study of Spanish at uni once, just for fun. In between practising speaking the language, they played us tapes of various songs in Spanish. Many of them were in this style, and most of them seemed to have the theme of "I want this girl but she can never be mine" or "My beloved doesn't want me any more, she has gone off with another man." Melancholy indeed.

Hm, never heard of spanish fado, think it was the melancholy part of flamenco.

Fado was "born" in the Mouraria, which is a part from Lisbon, and was very polical at the Salazar Era. Nowadays it's about unfulfilled Love, homesickness, and other melancholic themes. But it can also be very funny.

I'm surprised, that you've never heard of it, Haiducci ! It's very popular.

Yes, it's part of flamenco. I think, Fado, Flamenco and Tango are related - in a way. ;)
