Yeah, I know some of you will say: NOT another cheesy thread. Ah, the most wonderful time of year has rolled around again. You either love them or hate them but around this time of year you can't avoid them. Christmas songs! But now Thanksgiving is over and we can all crank the Christmas music! With no judgment! :)

I grew up listining to this holiday classic (HUGE Christmas fan) and I love them all really. Listening to Christmas songs brings back so many wonderful memories of my childhood and a happy feeling I can't explain. Yes, I'm talking about the classics. Sure, I mean Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You." But also older than that. ''Last Christmas'' by Wham. The older the better. ''Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree'' by Brenda Lee. :thumbs up:

I know there are so many good ones out over the years and by so many various artists, but my favorite Christmas song of all time is ''Fairytale Of New York'' by The Pogues Feat. Kirsty MacCol.

It makes you realise that there are two sides to Christmas, not everything is sweetness and joy.

I'd also like to introduce you the most funny (but kind of annoying at the same time) Christmas songs ever made. It's catchy, and a tune you'll have stuck in your head for DECADES! ''Dominick The Donkey'' by Lou Monte.

Anyone who says this isn't the catchiest Christmas song around is lying. :p

If you are already in the holiday spirit, let me know what your favorite Christmas song is. And don’t be embarrassed if it is Justin Bieber, everyone has a guilty pleasure! ;)

Two on my top list are Percy Faith's All We Need Is A Little Christmas and Brenda Lee's Rock Around The Christmas Tree.

I just love Christmas music as well. I don't think I have a favorite song but I really enjoy Bing Crosby and Mario Lanza. I also really like Dominik the Donkey by Lou Monte - who also did an excellent cover of Silent Night and Silver Bells - not as catchy as the donkey song but very mellow - kind of sit by the fireplace with a nice drink kind of music.

Roger Whittaker always makes singing sound so easy.....this song reminds me when life seemed so much simpler.

Perhaps someone can tell me how to post the video picture here?

The older the better.

Okay.

"Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen" from Bach, Christmas Oratorio BWV 248, based on the choral "Mein G'müt ist mir verwirret" from Hans Leo Hassler (+ 1612).

organ only

JE Gardiner with EBS, the first recording I got of this.

Paul Simon used the choral in the "American Tune" btw.

Tochter Zion

originally written by Handel as "See, the conqu'ring hero comes" from Judas Maccabaeus. In Britain and the Commonwealth it is known as that and become one of the many "national anthems". You have it at the Last night of the Proms usually, introducing "Rule Britannia" by Thomas A. Arne (2:00)

But in Germany it became a christmas song or to be precise for the Advent.
And since youtube has only cheese to offer I chose the version by Beethoven: variations for cello and piano.

I also love the already mentioned song by John Lennon. :) Only the original, covers don't work with that song.

My favorite is Auld Lang Syne (sp?) cause it means its New Year and the muzak in every store, elevator and mall is finally going to STOP playing those damned seasonal "favorites" which get stuck in my brain for hours on end...

I was watching "Live from Daryl's house" yesterday. Darryl Hall, the 80's pop superstar, does a regular podcast. Most of you won't even know the name, but Hall and Oates were the best of the 80's.l They're not stars anymore, but they are still making music.
The most recent episode wasn't for me, but the one before was the Christmas show. Shelby Lynne was the guest. She's a country singer, and she sang the darkest Christmas song EVER. About her dad, who hated Christmas.
A great show. Check it out.

And no, my browser won't let me link. Google it.

My favorite is the original version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas sung by Judy Garland to comfort Margret O'Brian in the movie Meet Me in St Louis. I love the undercurrent of melancholy (that is usually pushed aside in the cover versions). And to top it off, Garland was beautifully filmed by director Vincent Minnelli, who she would later marry.
