just found this thread, really interesting. great to see the 'mad, bad and dangerous to know' Kenneth anger mentioned by gorgik. Anger as an experimental auteur, was also influential upon the factory films, from Warhol/Morrisey, who also followed the artist as filmmaker concept. This continues with young artists now who use video/porn ideas to promote their work now, like 'Superm'(Brian Kenny+ Slava Mogutin) and of course GioBlackPeter. Its like the porn aesthetic in the avant garde, using a wide range of new media.

Yes Haiducii sometimes ago I've seen Mandragora as well as All The Boys and that was too the reason why I've written this post. After that film I've had always a little feeling of guilt by watching a porn film. But nevertheless I'll do it until today! :blushing:

When Scandinavia was porn capital of the world. An interlude.
Let's start talking a bit about what I mean when I talk about "Scandinavia" - I'm going to talk about Denmark + Sweden, but not Norway and Finland. Why so? Because there's quite big and important differences, not least when we're talking about attitudes and legislation concerning homosexuality.
De-criminalization of homosexual acts between consenting adults over 18 years of age happened in the following years:
- Denmark 1930
- Sweden 1944
- Norway 1972
- Finland 1971
So there's a big time gap between Denmark and Sweden on the one hand, and Norway and Finland on the other. If Finland in my opinion has been plagued by the worst homophobia, this is because what happened in Finland after the de-criminalization in 1971 : the Lutheran-Evangelical church of Finland demanded from the parlament in Helsinki a new Law prohibiting open encouragement of homosexuality, and the church got the filthy law it demanded. This Law against encouragement of homosexuality wasn't repealed until 1999, and at rock bottom it was the same type of law that sweet Maggie "The Witch" Thatcher introduced in Britain in 1988 and our beloved leader / Führer Vlad "Tepes Dracul" Putin announced in Russia recently. Good old traditional politics, aint that sweet...
At the same time, homophobia in the period from the late 1940s and until about 1965 was mostly as bad in Denmark and Sweden as in any other country in Western Europe.
But let's start with a rough sketch of modern gay politics in Scandinavia, which started in 1948 when Axel Lundahl Madsen and his lover and life partner Eigil Eskildsen (later on naming themselves Axel and Eigil Axgil) got the idea to start a Scandinavian association for homophiles, baptizing it Kredsen af 1948 ("The Circuit of 1948") - soon to be re-baptized Forbundet af 1948 - and launching its magazine Vennen in 1949.
In the beginning Kredsen/Forbundet af 1948 was a Scandinavian association with three national sections - Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, but these sections soon transformed into national associations: Swedish RFSL (Riksförbundet för sexuellt likaberättigande) in 1950, and Norwegian Norske Forbundet af 1948 in 1952.
Everything in Scandinavian homophile politics in the late 40s and early 50s happened in front of the dark backgrounds of the mega-magnitude disasters in Berlin/Germany 1933 and Moscow/Sovjet Union 1934. Remember what a big an vital homosexual culture there was in Weimar Republic Berlin before 1933 - every horny bi and homo in Europe took trips to Berlin and to the vacation resorts at the Baltic Sea Shore. Everybody was in Berlin - W.H. Auden, Steven Spender and Christopher Isherwood was there, Nils Dardel and Hjalmar Bergman and thousands upon thousands of lesser luminairies were there. Just think about the name that the Axgil's gave to their magazin "Vennen"! It's a name that vibrates of memories and longings ; just like dutch "Vriendschap", danish "Vennen" alludes to Weimar German "Die Freundschaft" and "Der Freund".
But disasters seldom comes alone! Since 1918 Sovjet had probably the most radical anti-homophobic legislation in the world, but in 1934 Iosif Vissionariovitj Dzugashvili aka Stalin constructed a new and intesely homophobic game and Komintern, the global communist organization, became Stalins henchmen for global red homophobia.
1933 and 1934 really were the years of great disasters! First the great fire of the Parlament in Berlin in early 1933 that gave Hitler the opportunity to effectively become the dictator of Germany; the accused arsonist was a young Dutch Marinus van der Lubbe who had been a member of the Dutch Communist Party - and guess if Joseph Goebbels propaganda machinery made the most out of this connection!
But in June 1934 things took a very different propagandistic turn! With Himmler and Göring by his side, Hitler murdered his good old friend and SA Chief of Staff Ernst Röhm. Now Röhm was homosexual as was many of the top ranks in the SA hierarchy, which Komintern used to globally turn the proagandistic table. In Komintern published a series of propagandistic masterpieces telling all and sundry, that every nazi is a homo, and every homo is a nazi.
Why the fuck am I talking about Hitler and Komintern in the 1930s? Because it is absolutely impossible to understand why the most militant homophobes in Scandinavia around 1950 were anarchists, socialists, social democrats, communists and radical liberals, not at all conservative christians, if you don't know about Kominterns propaganda victories in the 1930s. This is probably the most important point where you must absolutely not project the discussions of today on to the situation in 1950. Why are homos so baaaaad for society? BECAUSE EVERY HOMO IS A NAZI! So sayeth Komintern and so sayeth everybody who is Anti-Nazi...
The first serious problems for Forbundet af 1948 and Axel Lundahl Madsen came in 1952 and they were of an economic kind. Printing "Vennen" every month was much more expensive than he had thought, hence "Vennen" became a company of its own without any economic and legal association to Forbundet, and Lundahl Madsen resigned as its chairman.
And then, in 1955, came the disastrous Pornography Affair. The two Axgils, Axel and Eigil, had another small company besides "Vennen", International Modelfoto Service, where they made photos of handsome more or less nude young men, to be sold to other men and - advertised in "Vennen". Probably the worst thing was, that they also had some sex with some of the young men; under 18 yes, but not under 15.
The Pornography Affair started a 10 year long period of pain and sorrows, culminating in 1961 in what in Danish became baptized "Den Grimme Lov", i.e The Ugly Law. Ugly - because it made dozens upon dozens upon dozens of young men commit suicide in just a few year. It was a new regulation of male prostitution much more harsh than the regulation of the prostitution of women.
But in 1965 people started thinking that enough is enough. Den Grimme Lov was repealed and the period from 1965 to 1969 was probably the most radical period of turning the cultural, social and political tables there has ever been in Danish and Scandinavian history. In 1967 pornography in verbal media was de-criminalized and the same thing happened with visual media in 1969. So for the first time in western history, porn in all kinds of media had become fully legal in a country.
And when porn became fully legal in Denmark, it just couldn't take long before it became fully legal also in Sweden. So in 1971 the "good old" Law prohibiting publications offending discipline and morality (i.e. Publikation som sårar tukt och sedlighet) was repealed and we got the prohibition on window display of pornnographic images.
In 1971 Axel Lundahl Madsen employed Michael Holm and his lover Geurt Staal to edit the Swedish language gay magazine Revolt mot sexuella fördomar from small town Teckomatorp, Scania, and a year later on from Åseda, Småland. Lundahl Madsen, Holm and Staal inaugurated the mixture of porn, politics and news - so very typical of the 70s and 80s. Hrrrmmm...the pornographical is the political, and the political is the pornographical, wasn't that the proverbial saying? ("Revolt against sexual prejudices" - that is the Post-Stonewall magazine title if there ever was one!!!)
Excuse me dear friends for having gone just bla-bla-bla in this post, but I'll give you two things to look at!
First a YouTube clip from Swedish director Vilgot Sjöman's movie 491 from 1964. It's a movie that started one of the most heated public feuds in the 20th century in Sweden about sex, sexuality and film censorship. In many ways it's a piece of vicious homophobia, but without any doubt it's a movie of immense cultural and social importance in Swedish cultural history.
And then a download link to a Color Climax compilation. Even if you hear a lot of German voices shouting "Geil! Geil!", this is a Danish production...

Oh yes! Sam Delany is the true NewYorker, the true homo AND great admirer of Jane Jacobs -who isn't? Her book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" is one of the absolutely essential books! Let's say that Delany pushes a Jacobian analysis further into the fields of socio-sexuality in general and porn cinemas in particular!

And I think the effects still show in Finland. Going to smaller towns, there is no gay scene, no bars, and even in medium cities the scene is real quiet. Even though things are better, I think in Finland we have quite large amount of closet cases because of the attidutes of the parents. And finnish gay porn? Haven't seen much. But if you want somenthing, with bit of work and keeping on trying, you will get it And finland I think is in way quite conservative nation, every man has go to army (oh wait, you can choose today! 6 motnhs of army, 12 months of civil service or prison! I am grateful to haiducii for the poke to watch Mandragora. Reminds me of Hardcore 1979 where a girl runs away from her christian family to work in porn. Mandragora is a tragedy so I'm not supposed to laugh but the coke obsessed film director was a funny parody. That is great acting, to be comical and menacing at the same time. Was he based on anyone real?

A few more lines on Scandinavia!
Haiducii asked me write some on Scandinavia, and whenever haiducii asks me to bend over, I'll bend over right away! I'm not the NUTTY professor, I'm the SLUTTY one (And this time "Scandinavia" is no more, no less than Sweden.)
From hilarity to very serious matter! It doesn't matter what the KOMINTERN said or didn't say about homos, there was at least one spectacular Swedish homo who happened to be the most fierce anti-nazi and anti-hitlerist in Sweden. I'm talking about Karl Gerhard (1891-1964) who was the king of Swedish variety theater from the late 1920s and into the 1950s.
Is being an anti-nazi something obvious, what everybody is, or a question of great moral bravery? I'd say its all about time and timing; from the battle of Stalingrad (1943) on, almost "everybody" knew that Hitler and his Dritte Reich would soon be gone and "everybody" just naturally were anti-nazi.
But in the autumn of 1940 it was a very, very different matter. A few months earlier - in spring 1940 - Hitler had occupied both Denmark and Norway, and when Görings Luftwaffe was bombing the small norwegian town of Nybergsund hoping to kill and maim the king and lawful government of Norway, the ground shook in a small village on the Swedish side of the border where a young teenage girl lived with her parents. That girl was to become my mother, who told me this story about Hitler's bombing of Nybergsund hundreds of times, maybe - who knows? - so that I could tell you...
But back to the autumn of 1940 and Karl Gerhard writing his new variety, in which there was to be a song to be performed by the man himself! The name of the new variety was Gullregn (the botanic name in english is laburnum), and the title of the song was and is Den ökända hästen från Troja ("The infamous horse from Troy"). I know, I know most of you don't understand Swedish at all, but the really important thing is the voice, the tounge. And I'll give you two versions from YouTube!
The second version is from a movie from 1958.
Now that's some intense whipping - Hitler WHIP! Norwegian Nazi-Führer Vidkun Quisling WHIP!WHIP! and the Swedish government WHIP!WHIP!WHIP!
And those whiplashes were intensely felt in Berlin - ouch said Hermann Göring!:angry: What happened was this : A premiere of a new variety by Karl Gerhard was always a very big event in 1940s Stockholm; foreign minister Christian Günther had the German ambassador Prinz zu Wied as his guest. After the premiere the ambassador made a phonecall to Göring in Berlin telling him about Karl Gerhards song, and Göring went berserk, demanding that the Swedish government must immediately censor this rude and horrible and ugly song.
Now in 1940-41, when Berlin demanded something from Stockholm, they almost always got what they wanted, so minister Günther told Karl Gerhard to immediately stop singing this awful song.
But Karl Gerhard was the kind of homo you just didn't fuck with, not even Hermann Göring - der dicke Hermann - could fuck Karl Gerhard. So what he did was this - look at the first picture in the first YouTube-clip! You see a pic of a wooden horse from the varietys original scenography. Karl Gerhard stopped performing his song, but he let the horse stay on the scene and remain a part of the scenography - AND HE PUT A GAG ON THE HORSE!
This makes me warm, it makes me so damn proud! This sublime combination of moral courage and wit of oscarwildean proportions!
The next YouTube-clip is just sweet and cute! Karl Gerhard got himself a lover and partner - Göte Ericsson - 30 years his younger, and adopted a child, a little girl named Fatima. This is Karl Gerhard in the last few years of his life singing a duett with his adopted doughter. Sooooo sweeet

But if we go for the first definition (homosexual exclusivity) then the first gay porn mag in Sweden must be the magazine I talked about in my last post, Revolt (1971-1983).

I'm talking about Karl Gerhard (1891-1964) who was the king of Swedish variety theater from the late 1920s and into the 1950s.

I'd say its all about time and timing; from the battle of Stalingrad (1943) on, almost "everybody" knew that Hitler and his Dritte Reich would soon be gone and "everybody" just naturally were anti-nazi.
But in the autumn of 1940 it was a very, very different matter. A few months earlier - in spring 1940 - Hitler had occupied both Denmark and Norway, and when Görings Luftwaffe was bombing the small norwegian town of Nybergsund hoping to kill and maim the king and lawful government of Norway, the ground shook in a small village on the Swedish side of the border where a young teenage girl lived with her parents. That girl was to become my mother, who told me this story about Hitler's bombing of Nybergsund hundreds of times, maybe - who knows? - so that I could tell you...
But back to the autumn of 1940 and Karl Gerhard writing his new variety, in which there was to be a song to be performed by the man himself! The name of the new variety was Gullregn (the botanic name in english is laburnum), and the title of the song was and is Den ökända hästen från Troja ("The infamous horse from Troy"). I know, I know most of you don't understand Swedish at all, but the really important thing is the voice, the tounge. And I'll give you two versions from YouTube!

And those whiplashes were intensely felt in Berlin - ouch said Hermann Göring!:angry: What happened was this : A premiere of a new variety by Karl Gerhard was always a very big event in 1940s Stockholm; foreign minister Christian Günther had the German ambassador Prinz zu Wied as his guest. After the premiere the ambassador made a phonecall to Göring in Berlin telling him about Karl Gerhards song, and Göring went berserk, demanding that the Swedish government must immediately censor this rude and horrible and ugly song.
Now in 1940-41, when Berlin demanded something from Stockholm, they almost always got what they wanted, so minister Günther told Karl Gerhard to immediately stop singing this awful song.
But Karl Gerhard was the kind of homo you just didn't fuck with, not even Hermann Göring - der dicke Hermann - could fuck Karl Gerhard. So what he did was this - look at the first picture in the first YouTube-clip! You see a pic of a wooden horse from the varietys original scenography. Karl Gerhard stopped performing his song, but he let the horse stay on the scene and remain a part of the scenography - AND HE PUT A GAG ON THE HORSE!
This makes me warm, it makes me so damn proud! This sublime combination of moral courage and wit of oscarwildean proportions!
The next YouTube-clip is just sweet and cute! Karl Gerhard got himself a lover and partner - Göte Ericsson - 30 years his younger, and adopted a child, a little girl named Fatima. This is Karl Gerhard in the last few years of his life singing a duett with his adopted doughter. Sooooo sweeet

And also there was some film called Not Angels But Angels, doentary also. Czech by those film is/was the cesspit of child abuse, and I count luring desperate full aged boys to porn abuse as well. Some of course do it voluntarily, but some have no choice, and all haven't got the qualities to make it other vise, and usually it's just fighting against the time, but the end draws near and sure.

i have to admit i have been following this thread with avid fascination, Gorgik and Haducii I would love to sit down over a coffee and have a real conversation with you you on this topic. Addressing the question of when film gay porn arrived, I have done some research into this the main problem was of course the availability of cheap cameras to film such illegal content. it seems that the wide spread availability of 8mm film/cameras and projectors allowed individuals to film and copy men having sex. I have seen a number of reels transferred onto video dating from the 1930s.
my own interpretation is that porn is a technologically led medium, constantly mutating and that it is the increasing availability of ordinary people to consume porn thanks to the democratization of the means of consumption that has driven the increasing place of porn within society
