Can someone explain what it means when you're on a site, and instead of seeing images you just get boxes with a cross in.(I think it is called in English "thumbnails"?)
Text is readable but images are not visible.
I work for a while with that site (for clarity, it is not a porn site) and only a few days, i have this problem.
At first i thought that, at the site was working but i get commentary from other users on what i post seems the problem only to do for me.:?
There is no contact point where I can ask information to an admin. so i hope there are some computer freaks here who can help me.:thumbs up:
Grrrr annoying when you are powerless because this site is just as important to me as GHX_X

Hello Ioanna!

I think it would be much simpler if you made a screencap:

skrmklippi.png

(this is a screencap of (part of) my computer screen what it actually looks like for the moment)

Put your screencap in a post and point to what you want an explanation for.

I think they are called "placeholders" I see them from time to time here on GH, sometimes even on my own posts just after I have uploaded the pics.

Sometimes (but not always) if you right-click on the
x and select " show image" it will solve the problem

When an image is included in a web page it is effectively a link to a URL, which the browser then fetches and displays in the appropriate box.

If a page contains a reference to an image at a URL that does not exist, the browser needs to decide what to do. FireFox simply does not display the image at all, IE on the other hand puts the outline of where the image should go, and a red box with a white X in it to show that something went wrong.

Unless it is happening on a web page your wrote, it's probably not a problem on your end. The one exception to that would be content filtering of some kind - an over-zealous AV product, an over-ambitions firewall, an interferring ISP, or a repressive government.

Hope that helps,

B.

Wow! My amazement is two-fold. First is the observation of how different browsers handle images with broken links. Second is the adjectives for the sources of content filtering.

Thanks guys for the information and the advice you give.
I know what I have to do and I think I'll turn on a computer specialist (your explanation seems rather complicated and so skillfully I'm not.)
When I have found the cause and the problem is solved, I let you know....

....really? if you can fix my computer then you are my men baby....let me your
number i call you.

@Ioanna, actually, it is not that complex. First step is to change browser.

You might be using one of these browsers. Just try changing to another one, and your problem might be solved:thinking:

(Sidenote: Created using keynote, it is such an different interface compared to powerpoint. And it looks somewhat classy:) )

I've just been doing a bit of digging for help - looks like it's probably a browser problem. Internet Explorer seems to be the worst culprit but people reporting same problem with Opera and Chrome too.. if you are using IE take a look here :thumbs up:

Meanwhile went to my computer engineer and his explanation comes closest to the explaining by SlimJim which thanks SlimJim.
It would indeed involve a broken link that can resolve only by the owner of the site.
I do not know yet whether it can be resolved, I hope so because that site is very dear to me.
Below is the explanation I found on the link to consult by SlimJim

"Open the page in the desktop and right-click (or hold) the empty space where the picture should be. then tap or click Show image in the drop-down menu. If this does not work, the link to the picture can be broken, which is a problem that has to solve the owner of the site."

@name1 I have installed various web browsers but this does not solve the problem

Thanks to everyone wanting to help

Hi there everyone .... my again.
Problem solved, at least one contact point found and in my best English (another language was Russian) emailed the problem, never got an answer (it strikes me that many sites have a contact address but if you mail you never get an answer ... matter of courtesy) a few days later the problem was dissolved and now i am able to hopping around on the site as before.
I think it was indeed " the link to the picture can be broken, which is a problem that has to solve the owner of the site."
