The Beatles started the modern day craze, of course, with the "hidden" track at the end of Sgt Pepper, consisting of several seconds of high-frequency noise, inaudible to humans but audible to dogs. The idea was that you would be just relaxing exhausted after listening to the final notes of "A Day In the Life", and suddenly the family dog would jump up and bark and run around, making you wonder what the hell was wrong with it.
