When I was a mod I spent a lot of time testing anonymisers, and a list of trusted ones was created. At the top of that list, i.e. the most effective one was:

http://refhide.com/

I've been using that anonymiser since becase, well, it is the best one after all. It's never been a problem, until today, when a moderator deleted a link I had anonymised with it.

Has my hard work been abandoned? Are we now forcing people to use just one (inferior) anonymiser? Or did this moderator make a mistake?

Also, when I was a mod the practice was to fix links rather than delete them, the idea being to facilitate discussions rather than hinder them. This moderator deleted my anonymised link and hence totally undermined my post in a very serious discussion on the situation in Ukraine.

I assume it was a misunderstanding.

The anonymizing service which had used is okay.

You can add the link again.

It wasn't. I read your post yesterday and bookmarked the link for later. It went directly to the NYT site. I presume a moderator removed it at some stage, but the link is back again, now anonymized. Not a biggie, imo, so I suggest you stop your 'storm in a tea-cup' routine.

I'll have to take your word for it. I have a keyboard shortcut that pastes and anonymises links in one go - it's possible I hit the wrong shortcut key and did a plain paste by mistake.

Even if we assume I did do a woopsie, I still think deleting the link isn't a constructive response, it hinders the discussion under way, and once it's gone the poster can't easily go in and fix the link because they can't see the old version of their post anymore.

Anyway, all's well that ends well.

the tutorial you posted said to use url anonymizer, but every time I tried using it, the anonymous url it generated came back as "server not found" when the link to that anonymized url was clicked :(

so I tried refhide - the one you mentioned in this post - and that page didn't even load! are there any other alternatives?

thanks!

and, btw, since you're an admin, how about putting an option for YouTube in the message posting section for people's profiles like there is for posting in forums? thanks, again!

I haven't tried this in quite awhile, but I clicked on the link you provided, inserted the URL to be anonymized, got the anonymized link and put it in a post, but got a message that "This site can't be reached" even though I had just gone there to get the original URL.

Thanks for trying. Any other suggestions from anyone?

here's the anonymized link if you want to try it yourself:
