Yes, it's that time again! :D So, let's talk about Eurovision! :)

esc2014log.jpg

The 2014 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark at the B&W Hallerne! The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television shows in the world. It was on the 24th of May, 1956, that Europe saw the first ever Eurovision Song Contest. After 56 runnings, the contest is one of the most typical European traditions and without doubt, Europe's favorite TV show!

United Kingdom: Molly - Children Of The Universe

Little-known singer-songwriter Molly Smitten-Downes is to represent the UK at this year's Eurovision Song Contest. The 26-year-old will carry British hopes in Copenhagen, Denmark, in May with her song Children of the Universe. The pop singer has already had a taste of the limelight after having a UK top 10 hit in 2008 with Sash on the song Raindrops (Encore Une Fois). Her selection comes after Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck struggled for the UK in the past two contests. Tyler came 19th out of 26 countries in 2013, while Humperdinck finished 25th the previous year.

Smitten-Downes, who is known simply as Molly on stage, said: "To represent the United Kingdom in such a huge competition, not only as a singer and performer but as a songwriter is an unbelievable honour. I hope I can do us proud."

Spain: Ruth Lorenzo - Dancing In The Rain

Former X Factor contestant Ruth Lorenzo (31) will be representing Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest this year. Ruth, born in Murcia in southern Spain, appeared on the 2008 series with the likes of JLS, Diana Vickers, Bad Lashes and winner Alexandra Burke, finishing fifth. She triumphed over four other entrants during the national finals in her country and will be singing her half Spanish, half English ballad Dancing In The Rain – which she wrote herself – at the final of the song contest in Copenhagen on May 10. Spain last won Eurovision in 1969.

Relatively unknown in Spain, Lorenzo finished in the top five of the UK’s X Factor with Dannii Minogue as her mentor in 2008. She recently signed with a new record company and is aiming at the international market as well as Spain. Being chosen was “a great moment” not least because she had at last performed in public in her own country, Lorenzo said.

Italy: Emma Marrone - La Mia Città

Since Italy returned to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 they've used their popular Sanremo Festival to pick the artists or songs that would represent them in front of Europe: Raphael Gualazzi, Nina Zilli and Marco Mengoni, all finished in the Top 10. This year RAI, the Italian national television, has decided in an internal selection that the act that should represent them in Copenhagen is the successful female artist Emma.

emmamarron.jpg

Emma Marrone, born in Florence in 1984, started singing as a child. In 2013 she released her third album Schiena, which was the 5th biggest selling album of the year and the top selling by a female artist. Marrone said about the song choice that she is very happy as the song is penned by herself. Last November the song was included as a new track in the new edition of her Schiena album. It is produced by Brando who said about La Mia Città's sound to be inspired by 80s rock.

France: Twin Twin - Moustache

Twin Twin will represent France at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in The French broadcaster France 3 revealed the winner of its national final. After an entire month when people could vote for one of the three songs presented earlier, it was announced that Twin Twin won with the song Moustache and will represent France in Copenhagen! It is the first time since 2007 that the French public have had a say in the act who will represent them at Eurovision. It was not revealed how the public or the jury voted, so we do not know how close the results were.

twintwinvi.jpg

This is a trio of creative effervescence with electro, rock, rap, funk and chanson influences and consists of Lorent Idir and François Djemel, the twins after which the group is named; the third member being Patrick Biyik. With their spring-mounted melodies, their taste for mash-ups and striking conjugations, their use of gimmick and vibrant lyrics dealing with reality, Twin Twin looks like a great cure for the gloomy atmosphere.

Albania: Hersi Matmuja - One Night’s Anger

The final of Festivali i Këngës took place in the Albanian capital city Tirana, where 16 entrants fought for the honour to represent Albania in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. In the end of the show, seven jury members made their decision and gave Hersi Matmuja the awaited ticket to Copenhagen!

Matmuja was born on 1 February 1990 in Kukës. She started singing when she was 8 years old. She studies at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Despite her classical music training, Matmuja says her musical influences include Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Björk and ABBA. ''It’s a big responsibility, a big honor. The first days after winning the FiK contest, I was very emotional, I cried and laughed all together, but now I think I am more down to earth, and I’m able to understand what it means to represent my whole country in the big ESC stage,'' she said.

Estonia: Tanja - Amazing

At the grand finale of Eesti Laul, Estonia selected Tanja to represent the nation at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. The winner was selected in two rounds at the Nokia Concert Hall. Tanja and the Super Hot Cosmos Blues Band were voted by the public and a professional jury as the top two. A second vote, this time by only the public, named Tanja the winner. This year, Tanja, with the high tempo "Amazing", beat strong indie folk and blues rock competition to win.

tanja.jpg

Tanja was asked how she would celebrate her win: "I don't know yet. It's an amazing feeling. One guy asked me what I was going to do, and I said I'd pop the champagne." As for her chances in Denmark, she said, "I have no idea. We're gonna do our best. We'll see what we need to maybe change a little bit, or maybe not - but it's the ultimate thing a person can do."

Iceland: Pollapönk - Enga fordóma

First there were 297 submitted songs, then 10 semi-final entries shortened to 6 finalists and to 2 super-finalists. But only one becomes Iceland's entry at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. That honour fell to Pollapönk who will travel to Copenhagen to perform Enga fordóma ("No prejudice").

pollaponk.jpg

Pollapönk (lit. "puddle punk") was created by Heiðar Örn Kristjánsson and Haraldur Freyr Gíslason of the Icelandic post-punk band Botnleðja, who founded Pollapönk for the purpose of creating a music group that children and adults alike could enjoy. Haraldur's brother, Arnar Þór Gíslason, and musician Guðni Finnsson joined up in 2007 to complete the quartet.

Latvia: Aarzemnieki - Cake To Bake

Dziesma 2014 has just come to an end and Latvia has chosen its winner. Aarzemnieki (''Foreigners'') is going to fly the Latvian flag this upcoming May in Copenhagen, Denmark with “Cake to Bake”. Having made their debut in 2000, Eurovision 2014 will be the country’s fifteenth appearance in the contest. Latvia has recorded one victory in that time, at the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 when Marie N won with her entry I wanna, and they have failed to qualify in each of the last five contests.

aarzemniek.jpg

What's the story behind the song? Here is the explanation by Jöran from Aarzemnieki: ''There are so many gifted, talented people, even true and probably not-so-true heros all over the world. Asking them (mostly men) for a thing they can't, many consider – they actually don't know how to bake a proper cake. And even if – take it easy. It's ok if there are things you're not able to do. Ask people for help confidently. It's never a sign of weakness. Celebrate your disability and the fact there will always be people around loving to support you.''

Ukraine: Maria Yaremchuk - Tick-Tock

Ukraine was the first country in this season to choose their entry in the national selection, broadcast on eurovision.tv! 20 performers with completely different musical styles made altogether an amazing show in Kyiv. At the end, the TV viewers and the expert jury chose the strongest entry that will represent Ukraine in Copenhagen. It is Maria Yaremchuk with her song Tick-Tock!

image4pnp.jpg

Maria Yaremchuk was born in Chernivtsi and she's the daughter of the famous Ukrainian actor Nazar Yaremchuk. She was a finalist of the TV project Voice of the Country. In 2012 she represented Ukraine at the international contest of young singers "New Wave 2012", where she came third. She also participated in Evrobachennya 2013 - Natsionalyni vidbir, the national final used for finding Ukraine's representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, where she came fifth with the song "Imagine".

Malta: Firelight - Coming Home

Firelight are a Maltese folk band that will represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark, with their song "Coming Home".

image4hoh.jpg

The group Firelight was the eventual winner, but their folk/rock Coming Home did not resonate with the majority of viewers. In fact, the song came fourth in the tele-vote. The winner there was the familiar-sounding Hypnotica (think Euphoria, minus the staging), sung by the red-headed Jessika. However, the weighting of the vote was such that the jury members' decisions made the tele-vote irrelevant. Coming Home received top marks from four of five of those members and thus Malta follows Switzerland down the folk route for this year's competition.

Switzerland: Sebalter - Hunter of Stars

Die Grosse Entscheidungsshow, the Swiss national final, is a complex result from three different channels and featured six finalists. Sebalter with Hunter Of Stars won the ticket to represent the Helvetic Republic in Eurovision 2014.

image4zvz.jpg

Sebalter hails from Italian-speaking Ticino, and throughout the 22 years of his career, his violin has always been with him. He got the inspiration for his Eurovision entry Hunter of Stars during a several months long journey through the USA. His plan is to reach for the stars not only in his song, but also on stage in Copenhagen.

Romania: Paula & Ovi - Miracle

Paula Seling and Ovi have finally released the full and complete version of their song for Romania’s Selectia Nationala. And it sounds triumphant—for Romania, at least. The pair, who finished third with “Playing With Fire” in Oslo in 2010, seems to have struck gold yet again with “Miracle”.

paulaselin.jpg

The spectacular track, which sounds like it’s been produced by the likes of Avicii or Swedish House Mafia, surpasses the expectations set by the teaser and has all the right ingredients for a Eurovision hit. The simple lyrics, the infectious beats and Paula’s jaw-dropping 18-second high note, come together to pander to a lot of Eurovision aficionados’ taste.

Poland: Donatan & Cleo - My Słowianie (Slavic Girls)

Polish broadcaster, TVP, has confirmed that Donatan-Cleo will represent the nation with their hit My Słowianie, a song designed to challenge Slavic stereotypes. The original video has been watched almost 40 million times on YouTube and is already a massive domestic hit in Poland.

514d56c931.jpg

They've been asking their Facebook fans what language they sing in Polish or English. Well it seems a special bilingual version will be used in the contest. Many fans see Poland making the top ten with no problems. Warsaw 2015? It's also been confirmed that Donatan won't be present on stage.. so Cleo will have five backing dancers.

Lithuania: Vilija Matačiūnaitė - Attention

After a lengthy selection process, the song, Attention, was picked last week to represent Lithuania at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. Winning the right to representing the Baltic country Lithuania at the Eurovision Song Contest was not easy this year. The Lithuanian selection process started on the 14th of December with a special concert to celebrate the 20th anniversary for the debut of Lithuania at the Eurovision Song Contest where the twenty candidates were presented. Since then, the twenty hopefuls have been narrowed down to three after nine qualification heats.

vilijamata.jpg

After the announcement Vilija Matačiūnaitė said: “I will be accompanied [to Copenhagen] by many friends, who decided to go with me.” When asked whether she intend to win, Vilija replied: “There is only one place for the winner – the first place. All other places are last and are worth nothing. We won’t be an exception; we are going there to win.”

Israel: Mei Finegold - Same Heart

The Israeli broadcaster, IBA, has announced that Mei Finegold has been chosen internally to represent Israel at the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen. After holding a large national selection last year, IBA decided this year to downsize this and instead went for an internal selection where three artists were all in contention for the coveted honour of representing their country in Denmark in May.

israelmeif.jpg

Mei Finegold is no stranger to the Israeli music industry, after taking bronze at the seventh national singing competition, the Kokhav Nolad. She is notorious for her powerful voice, stage charisma and virtues. Known to sing mostly in Hebrew, Mei has succeeded to break boundries and reach the top charts internationally. She is also currently working with her band, Disiac.
