Captain Beefheart

Captain Beefheart (Glendale, CA, January 15, 1941 - Arcata, CA, December 17, 2010) was the pseudonym of American musician and painter Don Van Vliet, born Don Glen Vliet. In high school Vliet befriended Frank Zappa, who had a great influence on him. He became a composer, instrumentalist, singer, artist, painter and sculptor. In the sixties he made with his Magic Band experimental double album Trout Mask Replica, which by many as one of the highlights of the (rock) music seen from the 20th century. In total he made twelve studio albums.

Because commercial success forthcoming, Captain Beefheart decided to return to uncompromising compositions, which were complemented by revised vestiges from Trout Mask Replica period. The latter phase culminated in three panels: Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), Doc at the Radar Station and Ice Cream for Crow. On the last record is the original wide vocals become almost monotonous croaking. For this trilogy, he appealed to a new generation of musicians, including Gary Lucas, who played the role of orchestral masterpieces like John French had happened to him in earlier stages.

Captain Beefheart died on December 17, 2010 one month before his 70th birthday on the effects of multiple sclerosis, which he suffered for years.
