Wayne SHORTER (1933)
A central force in three of the 20th century’s great jazz groups: the Jazz Messengers, led by drummer Art Blakey, who established the mid-century “hard bop” style; the second iteration of Miles Davis’s quintet in the mid to late 1960s that led Davis to his electric period; and the hugely successful fusion group Weather Report, formed in 1970. He also had a long and fruitful partnership with Joni Mitchell, appearing on 10 of her albums, and collaborated with rock musicians such as Carlos Santana and Steely Dan. He is an 11-time Grammy award winner, including their lifetime achievement award.

Which tune to pick... tricky, very tempted to choose a Weather Report track like A Remark You Made but in the end went for this Joni track (she was honoured with the Gershwin Prize this week, only the 3rd female to do so)

Paul James O'GRADY MBE DL (1955)

(So we loose 2 drag acts in the same week. I forgot to post about Lilly but Edna's departure reminded me.)

An English comedian, broadcaster, LGBTQ campaigner, drag queen, actor, and writer. He achieved notability in the London gay scene during the 1980s with his drag persona Lily Savage, through which he gained broader popularity in the 1990s. O'Grady subsequently dropped the character and in the 2000s became the presenter of various television and radio shows, including chat shows & quiz shows, The Paul O'Grady Show and For The Love Of Dogs.

Harry BELAFONTE (1927)
US Singer, Activist, Actor

At a time when segregation was widespread in the US, Belafonte stormed the pop charts in the 1950s with hits like "The Banana Boat Song", with its signature "Day-O" lyric, "Jump in the Line", and "Jamaica Farewell". No one, black or white, was bigger in records or concerts, particularly around the release of his album Calypso (1956). He went into movies like Carmen Jones (1954), and Island in the Sun (1957) where he notably portrayed the first interracial couple in American mainstream film. But his longest career was as an activist for civil rights, notably working along side Martin Luther King Jr, but continuing on throughout his life fighting prejudice and poverty, vocally advocating for the release of Nelson Mandella, and protesting the Iraq war. Along the way he won 3 Grammys (including a lifetime acheivement award), a Tony Award, an Emmy, and the Gene Hersholt Humanitarian award at the Oscars.
