Keep tv on or turn it off all the time?

Hello I turn my tv on and off alot would it be better just 2 keep the thing on...


I could not find a good way 2 ask my question sorry..

Not sure how it is with newer flat panels, but old tube type TV's are much like light-bulbs. Most of the wear on them is from starting up. They will actually last much longer if they remain on constantly.

The TV in my bedroom has been on almost non-stop for the past 12 years, only going off during the occasional power-failure or blown circuit breaker. It still works perfectly. Even if I'm watching a show or movie on my computer, I leave it on and just mute the sound.

The TV's in the living room and my mothers bedroom are only on when being watched. In the same 12 year period, we've replaced the one in the living room 3 times, and her bedroom 4 times. In fact, the one currently in her bedroom is the old one from my bedroom that I've had for 20 years now...

I also have no technical experience with modern stuff. As for the old ones, you have to understand that for the creating of the picture (the picture tube) there is a beam of electrons that bomb a reflecting screen. The larger the screen, the higher the voltage that is required. Old fashioned B&W screens used about 12.000 Volts, the full colour ones need about 30-35.000 volts. A humid environment is therefore an ennemy for old fashioned TV's. It can cause leakedge of tension (you hear a rasping sound) or even shortcuts. Under such conditions it is better to keep the machine on. Normally it is a rule that use means aging, and old age leads to death.

I gave up TV many years ago. Realized just how much time I waste in front of it being zombified by programs I don't even wanna watch And it came as a suprise how easy that time gap is to fill. Try keeping it off maybe

I didn't go that far, but TV is for me not a primary life condition. I watch it when I take a break from real activity. Maybe it is an idea to handle TV as I do the newspaper. I make a quick selection of the interesting topics. Those I save for the moments that I have to do important business on the toilet.
A TV in the bathroom (a modern one because of the wet conditions), that's a brilliant idea.

Better to go online, there is less passivity and you can interragire with others, even though virtually.

I usually turn it off once it's not being looked at. Electricity isn't cheap in the Caribbean.

I think you guys have misunderstood the question...

He's not asking IF you turn your TV on and off, nor is he asking about your viewing habits...

He's asking if it's better for the TV to leave it on or shut it off when not in use...
