Hide Your IP Addy ?

Does anyone hide there ip address and if that some thing i would like to get into what should I do to get started?

yes at times in past i have..its actually easy..there are programs for it but its simple to do in windows...google it babe..its all there!!

Well, there are anonymous services that "hide" your ip address by making all browser requests from their servers, and then passing that data back to you.

Pro

• The web site to which you are surfing doesn't know who you are.

Cons (or not-quite-so-Pro)

• The web site does know that you are coming in via a particular proxy service
• Your internet service provider (or anyone tapping into their line) could examine the data packets and see where you have been surfing.

Then, there is TOR. TOR is a network of computers around the world that proxy your web traffic from server to server several times before finally picking a random host to use in making the request to the web site. Because it uses multiple hops (changing your IP address each time) and because it regularly changes your path, it is next to impossible from anyone to snoop on your web activity.

TOR comes in several forms depending on how technical you want to get and what exactly you are trying to protect. But the easiest way to use it is to install the TOR Browser. This is a version of portable Firefox that communicates only over the TOR network.

Which brings us to the downside of using TOR. As you might expect, routing your web requests to China and back slows things down. It's the simply the cost of a mult-proxy secure solution.

But the nice thing about the TOR Browser, is you can use your regular browser when you want speed and don't care as much about security. Then you can switch over to the TOR version of FireFox when you want to go "Incognito" (to swipe a term from Google Chrome browser).

Try it. It's very easy to install and use. You can even put it on a flash drive and carry it with you from computer to computer.

O, yeah... and it's free.

you can do it free...but..the rub is this...most sites only look at simple ip servers but if you run java its always gona show real ip

Good advice from Topdog (as usual).

Just a few points to add:

1) TOR is REALLY REALLY SLOW - like REALLY
2) TOR has a flaw - the two end points can see your data, and, anyone can create an end-point, including nation states, so, even with TOR, you're not as anonymous as you might like to think you are!
3) who ever you trust to be your anonymiser has full access to your data, and can alter it in transit. If it's free, how are they making money? They are not charities! They could be gathering all your data and selling it. Or, they could be injecting ads into your web pages that they get paid for. If you're not paying for something, you're almost certainly the product being sold!

Technologically, there are three routes you can go:
1) Some form of web proxy.
2) Some form of VPN
3) TOR

They all have downsides.

The real question is to ask what you are trying to achieve? Are you trying to make it impossible for your ISP to know what you are doing? Are you trying to stop the owner of the websites you visit knowing who you are?

I'll be honest, I don't bother with any of that crap - far more trouble than it's worth IMO, unless you have a real good reason to want anonymity, and even then I'd recommend being selective about it, and not just anonymising everything.

It's no so much the downloaders who need to be careful, it's the uploaders. The thing with torrents is that downloaders are uploaders too, so everyone is putting themselves at risk, and, everyone is doing so with their IP exposed.

If you are in any way worried about your government, don't ever torrent!

One good development recently is that courts are rejecting the idea that an IP address is enough to prove someone did something. It only proves that something was done from that network, not WHO did it.

I'm sorry, but that is total and utter BS.

Do not follow this bogus advice!

Either - you are changing your internal PRIVATE IP address which is never seen by anyone anyway, and has no effect on the public IP that IS seen.

OR - you are just changing from one IP in your ISP's IP space to another - in which case you ISP still knows who you are.

Any other change would lead to your internet not working.

IP traffic is routed, each ISP has a block of IPs, if you set your public IP to an IP outside your ISP's range, then no traffic can ever reach you, because it will be routed to the real owner of that IP address, and will never enter your ISP's network.

Learn how TCP/IP works before posting dangerous nonsense please!

Do bear in mind though, I do this for a living - I'm part of a small team that manages a network of over 3,000 computers. The protocols that make the internet go are literally my bread and butter!

Sorry, but you are wrong on this one.

People keep saying that, but providing nothing to back up their statements.

TCP/IP (the protocol stack that transmits data across the internet) is a routed protocol. You can't just pick random IPs and assign them to yourself, if you do, no traffic can reach you from the internet, because it will get routed to the real owner of the IP range your self-assigned IP belongs to.

It's like deciding your address will be NYC, even though you live in LA. You can say that, but no letters will reach you!

I'm interested in why you wouldn't recommend anonymising everything?

A few reasons:
1) complexity - takes time and effort to set up, more points of failure, and makes trouble-shooting harder
2) speed - everything you do to anonymise slows you down. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, but always slower.
3) false sense of security - in order to REALLY be anonymous you have to trust your anonymiser to keep no logs, and to refuse to share their data with others. If something is free it's either a charitable organisation (TOR being one of the VERY rare examples of this), or, you are the product being sold. If you pay for a service, there is a money trail, so kiss anonymity good bye! Finally, even if there is no bad intent by your provider, you are probably still leaking enough data that those who really want can piece it back together. A good example of this is malicious TOR exit nodes. It's a crap-shoot where you end up in TOR, but there are bad hosts on the network, so you're taking your chances like everyone else!

Ultimately, unless gay porn is a crime in your country, you're probably wasting your time with anonymisation. If it is a crime, you need to be REALLY careful who you trust to do your anonymisation for you!

I didn't argue against this. I said you can't just take a random free IP and use it like you said a few posts back. That's what I've been arguing with, not that anonymisation is possible.
