This song is a masterpiece. It still gives me chills.
This was the first UK #1 hit that featured a British artist writing, singing, arranging, producing, and playing all the instruments on the song. I know, it's hard to imagine nowadays that there was a time when the solo singers were REAL MUSICIANS.

Speaking of REAL musicians, I've been listening to Elton John's self-titled album again, in honour of Paul Buckmaster, who died recently. Buckmaster, as you may know, worked as a composer/arranger for many famous artists, including the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Carly Simon and Taylor Swift, but it's for his work on the early Elton albums that I think he deserves to be remembered best. Songs like this one for example; listen to the amazing string arrangements:
