When and how was your "Coming Out"?

My coming out didn't go well at all. This was before the time the PTA started protesting a gay character being on the show Dawson's Creek. I went to a high school in the middle of a corn field in Indiana. I was 14 at the time. I didn't even know any better, because of lack life experience plus to me, liking guys wasn't any sort of issue to me. It seemed to me to be as natural as breathing air. So when I realized I liked guys, i just shrugged, accepted it without a question, and proceeded to tell my friends I had grown up with. That was a big mistake. My school experience ended up turning into pure hell. I told my parents, and thankfully they didn't have a problem with it, but every time I can home with bruises or things from school, the school played it off like I slipped and fell down stairs or something. My parents didn't have the income to move or send me to a different school. In the end, I had to drop out of school and get my GED. It happened when it hit a breaking point and guys in my phys ed class decided to play kick the faggot in the locker room. It ended up being me versus 6 other guys. The coach walked in, saw who they were kicking the crap out of, smiled, nodded and just walked out.

That's horrific :(

I'm not at all a big fan of the modern litigious society, but at least you could sue the gym teacher to cover all medical costs now, as well as punitive damages. My partner was hospitalised in a school beating in his teens, and his mum successfully sued the school because it was the last in a long list of ever worse lapses by the school in their responsibility to protect their students. After that there were no more problems - his people in their wallet and you'll be surprised how quickly their attitude adjusts!

I came out late, first to one close friend in college and then got more active in grad school

..

my coming out was quite easy: I lived with my best friend-turned boyfriend in a room in college, we often spoke to our parents via skype. One day I just felt like letting them know, grabbed him in front of the camera and kissed him. My mum looked surprised for maybe a second, but then she laughed and was totally ok with it. My father as well. I felt so comfortable doing it because I somehow sensed I guess that they would react in that mature way. I seriously would have been upset with my parents would they have any other way, as for me it stands in one line with antisemitism and racism. Though and through stupid.
The other side of the story: My bf was so impressed by their reaction that he told his own mother the next day, they brought him back home that same week ;(

I don't think you ever stop coming out. There's always someone who is silly enough to think I'm straight.

"Coming Out" is all hype - I have always and simply been ME - If people don't like me as I am, too bad, and if they dom gfreat! SoBe It!

i never came out. it's not easy in asia!!. they'll throw me out. it would be the end of the world.

I agree... for many people the "default aussumption" is straight... you constantly have to come out...

my parents are muslim. That said they are not hardcore Muslim but still hate the idea. But i think they real issue is that im ithe only son and they want grandkids. Not to say they don't find the idea itself sick..but that is what i think really bugs them. And the rest of the family just hates the premise of homosexuality.

My Coming Out

I came out to my family and to my former fiance; no one was surprised and no one cared. There was no support at all.

My employee's outed me by asking everyone via a megaphone 'what's it like working for a fag?'

Out at 60

When I was 60 years old, heterosexually married 31 years, with three adult
children, I admitted to myself that I was gay. I was 65 years old when I fell in
love with a man and experienced for the first time in my life what it was like to
be normal.

What a wasted life.

I'm not gay, but I suspect some of the men I sleep with are.

my friend told my parents, it sucked at first but now it's all good.

I came out late in life when I was in college but I always knew what I was as did my family but we never discussed it or taked about it,pretended it didnt exist

ive known since i was like 11-12 when a friend of mine and i began experimenting. was officially forced out on my b-day this year. now the people who matter to me most know and dont really care. made me feel like a weight was lifted off my shoulder and i could focus on important shit, like going back to school and losing the weight i need to for health and personal reasons!;)
