What a day in the British Isles...

Being an avid golfer, I'm currently watching the European Golf tournament being played in and around Fife, Scotland. Oh how I wish I was there following my favorite golfer around the Kingsbarne Golf Course...Rory McIlroy..the youngster from Ireland.

But what a difference a day makes....yesterday was a mess, huh? It must be just beautiful today...If the sun is shining and its blue skys in Scotland, does that usually mean the same for Ireland, England and Wales? I say all you brits head out for a pint or two :thumbs up:...I'll be there shortly...

The weather can be very different in each region.

The wetest parts are Wales & Nothern Ireland (and the rest of Ireland, although that's not part of Britain) . Scotland can have some very cold and inclement weather and I think it snows more on the West than the East.

The South of England is warmer, but the South West , especially South Devon , is usually always warmest. The Torbay area has its own micro-climate and can be very hot even when the rest of the area or country is having wet weather.

And that's the end of the weather forecast, now the news headlines again.........

London was almost always cold and wet when i was there...but i still loved it Can't believe it stays so cold there in the summer compared to here (midwest US).

Yes that's probably more or less it for the British Isles. The further west you go the wetter it generally is (ask anyone from the West of Ireland). On the other hand, the east of England and of Scotland may be drier (though in these island's that's a relative term!) but they are further from the gulf stream and so are generally colder. It also generally gets warmer from north to south of course as well. Wherever you are, though, you are really at the mercy of the Atlantic and (in summer) the jet stream. Sometimes they are kind, sometimes not. You can get summers that last for ever and summers that never even get started, like this one. However late spring and early autumn this year have both been really good - until yesterday that is, and Scotland, where the golf was, was worst hit! Here in the London area there was a bit of wind and it was a bit dull, but nothing like Scotland and North East England.

Most of the time the weather in these islands is a daily mystery hidden even from our meteorologists - they rarely seem to get it right. Except for the odd freak winter like 1963 or the rare immoveable high pressure in summer that gives weeks on end of sunshine, it doesn't get really cold, and it doesn't get really hot for any length of time. Snow generally is gone after a day or two, and some parts of the west hardly ever see it. I disagree that the west gets most snow - it seems to be most likely in a strip down the eastern side of the country within a few miles of the sea. But then, there's hardly a single thing you can say about our weather that you can't contradict in the next sentence. We tend not to get extremes but considering we're hardly bigger than most American states when all put together (and smaller than many), we get a lot of weather. That's why we talk about it so much I suppose.

I still don't understand....

The main Brit Island is about the same size as that states of Ohio+Indiana
Yet, when I was there, it seems so much bigger...why?

The weather is so much diverse there, where the weather in Ohio is just about an hour behind of Indiana's.

The population of O+I is about 17 million, the pop of Brit about 61 million....where do all the people hide cause the pop didn't seem any more dense than O+I? Actually some of the English countryside seems less dense than O+I's..?

In O&I you might find 3 or 4 different regional accents...where in Brit...oh hell it seems like 100's.

idk...maybe why I am so obsessed with the UK...just a much more intense experience than here...
Yes...the US is boring...it's just about shopping...really.

Yes Intense, our accents change within just a few miles of each other. We do have some quite empty spaces despite a huge population. Try Shaftesbury Avenue, London, on a Sunday afternoon!! You can hardly move (but the hot totty, both sexes, is quite amazing ).
On the other hand I've been in the North East of England in the summertime and there is virtually nobody around !!
