Do you regard yourself as shy?

i was REEEEALLLY shy as a kid, if i was lost i couldnt even ask a stranger at a shop for help

I have always considered myself shy which now in older age I relate to a form of insecurity. I have always been super selfconscience of my appearance. Never leave the house unless I think my appearance is acceptable in that my hair is all in place, or wear a hat, my clothes are clean and neat. It all falls back on worrying what other people think it became an obcession. But look out once I get to know you, I come busting out of the closet and will talk you ear off, lol.

Geez... I have so many personalities anyways.... 1 for work, 1 for friends, 1 for smalltalk and other encounters, many online and the list goes on:D But yes, sometimes I feel shy for no reason. It's maybe anxiety of some sort.

I am a typical “twentenaar” (that is the name of the people from a certain part of the east of the Netherlands). So I am a bit stiff and introvert. Sometimes I even think that I am socially disabled. It is nearly impossible for me to have nonsense conversations (about the weather and such things). But I am certainly not shy. It doesn’t interest me what other people think of me. I feel no problems (or nerves) to speak for an audience. The only moment that I am able to hold nonsense conversations is when I am under the influence of alcohol. Probably because I do not really have to hear my own words.

Yes I WAS shy but since I have a job where I have a lot in front of a crowd of people, I'm not shy, which is not to say that I am arrogant or conceited, I'll watch yet well how I do in humans.
It's a matter of how you learn to deal with situations, have confidence, believe in yourself and think occasionally .... fuck you I'm the best!
Of course, in the cyber world is all glorifying and anonymous, who have short attention can find everything on the net and unfortunately some young people on webcam ... you know that story, not?

I am not shy - but I remain quiet until I come to terms with my surroundings.

Yes, AND introverted too, which makes a really nasty combo. I generally don't talk as much as other people, and even when I want to social anxiety would set in.... I'll doubt if I can really add to the conversation, or what I say would make others look at me like I'm some alien or something. There are a few friends that I can talk to and really connect with, but almost never in a group setting, I don't have the confidence to speak out (and even when I do, they always get drowned out by others..... Fuck that!)

Online? Maybe less so, I have the time to articulate my thoughts out better (and I'm anonymous), but still the anxiety is always there. I guess for most of my life I've been teased and laughed at so much that it's been ingrained in my mind forever :/

Hi Theseeker - you really are able to start a flame in everyones heart!

when I was a kid, my dad very often said to me: Go through the world with an upright back. Never look to the bottom, never look to the stars - but always look straight ahead!

What I want to tell you is: don't let yourself tear down by so called friends or other people who think you will not be able to make a conversation. And most of all, don't imagine that they think so! Perhaps they don't if you will give them your opinion with a strong mind.

And than truly you will start a flame in the hearts of your friends.

I've always been very shy. I think several reasons are fear of being accepted, being ridiculed, or being excluded.

I don't mind coming out to this group as well. But who's got the problem? I see too many loud sniggering pushy people. They are the ones who cause accidents, arguments and fights. What an awful world it would be if everyone was brash and selfish. They are not better than us quiet gentle folks so there's no need for us to feel second best.

This is a great thread, I feel a lot of myself in here. I am shy and introverted for a lot of the same reasons, it feels good to find kindred souls. I'm so glad to have found this place.

I used to be shy, but then I realized it's just an feeling that is holding me from doing things I really wanna do. So I climbed that barrier over and over again that was keeping me from being who I wanna be, and it vanished totally. And I don't compare myself to others, I just try to be the best me I can be. And I I compare myself to others, like I see somenthing in someone that I would personally wanna be, I ask myself do I really want it, and can I achieve it. Learning from others is okay. And of course we are social creatures, we in some way always mirror ourselves trought others, trough our time, our society, but that doesn't mean you should envy someone. It's useless, actually it's really negative and harmfull. You loose in it more than you can gain.

not shy at all if you knew how I was raised and all you would understand why hehehe

Only when I pee.

That is something what I really can understand - I don't like it too if anybody is watching me if I'm peeing. So I hate public toilets. I can't pee if there is only another one at the toilet doing the same. No drop will come out until I'm alone again. But I don't know if that will be a sign of beeing shy!?
