That doesn't really strike me as surprising. The guy is a clear arsehole and always was from the start. He gladly allows anything and everything (upto and including spy/malware) to advertise on his site. And does a worse job with personal info than the government do!

I just love how they change all their settings and set everyone to YES by default. Just assuming that everyone would like to share every piece of salient information including that one rectal exam they had back in 1984. It's pretty sad frankly.

Then of course, they're always phased in under the cover of darkness and secrecy so noone knows when/if it's coming. And gladly sacrificing service for their own personal reasons. It's... a pretty sad state of affairs.

It's why I rarely use Facebook now unless it's to publicise something fairly important.

I only keep it for "advertising" reasons I certainly never write or discuss personal issues on there. It amazes me looking through some people I used to know years ago how much some post, right down to where they went to school and all the jobs they have done and their current position, even the address of their employer!!

Most of my "friends" on there I haven't a clue who they are There are a select few who I do, but I keep in touch with them by email & msn not via facebook.

Never liked social networking sites anyway. Haven't posted on my MySpace page for months. It's probably covered in cobwebs by now

Well there was a news story out pretty recently that a guy had his bungalow burgled through information found on Google Maps. And another guy in the past had his entire garage cleared out based on information from Google Street View. Just so happened that his garage door was open when it passed by and it showed all the expensive electronics he had stashed in there.

If any property of mine ever ends up on such a site, I know for sure I'll be seeking for it to be immediately taken down with no arguments. It's an invasion of privacy. You share the information you want to share only. You don't give them a key to your personal vault and tell them to run riot.

this is some scary sh!t, but i always thought google maps was outdated... i mean when i looked at my house, it was about 2-3 years outdated just judging by the fact we'd gotten new cars and it still had the cars we moved in with.

That quote shouldn't be terribly surprising! I don't use any social networking sites currently; I don't really like the idea of people I chose to cut out of my life just being able to find details about me that are none of their business.

It is disturbing, as plenty of repressive governments (such as the US) are waiting with mouths wide open to attain facial recognition software and other ways to track anyone they so please.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg pledges easier privacy


Facebook says its members will have simplified user settings soon Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has admitted that Facebook "missed the mark" over recent privacy concerns.
In a column in the Washington Post newspaper, he said the social network would soon make changes to users' privacy options.
The move may placate some of the growing band of members who had pledged to quit the social network on 31 May.
"Sometimes we move too fast - and after listening to recent concerns, we're responding," wrote Mr Zuckerberg.
"The biggest message we have heard recently is that people want easier control over their information.
"Simply put, many of you thought our controls were too complex. Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark," he wrote.
The technology blogger Robert Scoble also published, with permission, an e-mail exchange with Mr Zuckerberg from the weekend, in which the Facebook CEO admitted "we've made a bunch of mistakes".
Privacy concerns Facebook has faced increasing criticism from US civil liberties advocates, consumer groups and lawmakers. European Union data protection officials described recent privacy changes as "unacceptable".
Mr Zuckerberg's admission also comes after Facebook said on Friday 21 May that it had changed how it shared data with advertisers on the site.
The Wall Street Journal had highlighted how under certain cirstances Facebook had been sending the user name or ID of the person clicking on an advert to the relevant advertiser.
"We fixed this case as soon as we heard about it," a Facebook spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal.
Mr Zuckerberg did not offer a date on which the new settings would be implemented, but said the social network was "working hard to make these changes available as soon as possible".
However, it remains to be seen whether Facebook has done enough to change the minds of a growing band of users who had said they would quit the social network.
The quitfacebookday website records that more than 13,500 Facebook members have committed to deleting their profiles on 31 May 2010.
