Since FileSonic is apparently the anointed service here, let me ask a couple questions.

With payment, FileSonic promises to "download files at an incredible speed."

I've paid, and "incredible" is exactly right: Half the time (at least), I'm informed that downloads will take 2, 4, even 6 hours. And then, the "service" proceeds to do exactly that--dribble on until the connection times out. X_X

I'm curious why this is a good deal for me, and why FileSonic is preferred here.

I have 1) a paid membership at FileSonic; 2) broadband internet; and 3) am downloading files of various sizes, but usually around 200 MB.

What am I doing wrong? Am I the only one getting this dribble?

I don't want to seem surly, but even free Rapidshare on a Sunday is better than this.

I find allthe services occasionally slow down. Fileserve has been bad lately. Sometimes if you cancel a download and start over it helps

Thanks. I've done exactly that, but get the same result, or worse.

The thing is, on a multi-part download, for example, one part will announce a 4-hour download while the next part (of similar size) will finish in 10 minutes.

I dl'ed a couple on FS today. Its one of the fastest. I love it. I dl'ed a 708 Mb clip in 4 parts as a free user. Took maybe 10 minutes per piece.

Hmmm, that is clearly no good. First of all, you are definitely on some kind of broadband connection? YOu are on a DSL or cable or a fiber service? You are not using dialup?

Have you measured your dl speed? Have you used one of the free speed measuring services like Speakeasy?

Do you ever get a fast dl, or is it just FS which is this slow? I use FS daily as a free user and it maxes out my line speed. If you access your network wirelessly, try connecting an Ethernet cable directly - bypassing the wireless router.

Try right clicking on the task bar at the bottom of your screen and open the Task Manager. See if any processes are maxing out your CPU or memory. Install a free bandwidth monitor such as Networx. See if your transfer rate at idle is 0 bits both up and down.

I always use a download manager (esp with the sites I pay for like Filesonic and Oron) which makes my lifer a whole lot easier. Yes it can be slow at times but nothing like you're suggesting.

Good points and suggestions, all of them :thumbs up: Many times, the download host is blamed for speed issues that really exist at the local ISP or even the machine connection itself. If all of the above troubleshooting validates proper connectivity, it is possible that your service provider is throttling packets from high-level host sites. Normally, most ISPs throttle bit torrent packets, but some are not as selective.

My paid membership gives me exactly what Filesonic promises - incredibly fast downloads. I am familiar with internet operations and my machine, router and O/S are tweaked for maximum efficiency and throughput. However this is fairly simple to accomplish without having a great deal of tekkie knowledge. Parse the other posts in this thread about troubleshooting download connectivity. Google search with a string such as "tweak tcp/ip windows xp" and replace xp with the name of your O/S. You should find some good stuff for adjusting and perfecting the speed of data coming from the internet into your machine.

BTW, the term broadband internet is generic for anything faster than dialup. Broadband speeds can range from a turtle-like 250 Kbps down, to an ultrafast connection of 50 Mbps down (mine at my home). Your provider will tell you (usually on your bill) what your connection speed is maxed at.

I,too, have found that Filesonic is highly variable over the past month. It used to work very quickly for me before (even when I wasn't subscribed). I dropped Hotfile when it became useless and stopped Fileshare so that I could cancel my cursed Paypal account. Now, when some uploaders (like Supremos) offer both FS and FSC links, I will used the Fileserve link because its just faster even with wait time and captcha. Yesterday I started a 13 (!) part download on FSC at about noon. The first part took an hour. Second part, 45 minutes. Parts 3-13 took only minutes apiece.Go figure!!
I figure its mostly due to server capacity rather than whether you pay or what kind of connection you use.

Personally, considering that I paid for my computer, paid for the software to run it, paid for the electricity to run it, and pay for a over-priced supposedly "high-speed" Internet connection, its hard for me to justify having to pay for file services, which frequently either go out of business or go from being cheetah speed to becoming slower than an slug. It's basically just another way to fleece people. Problem being, at least here in the US, we have few choices. We can try to somehow protect privacy and use torrents, which although fast, can come with police raiding your house, your computer taken, and a huge fine and/or jail time, or use file services which claim to protect personal privacy of files. Sadly, few if any places offer downloads from multiple services, i.e. Filesonic, plus Megaupload, plus Hotfile, plus Mediafire, etc. There are some ways to somewhat "skip" download waiting on non-premium accounts, but those don't always work. I do wish someone would come up with a better option.

Sheesh, I'm sad so many people have dl problems. And especially those who have subscribed to a service.

Perhaps this is the nature of the beast. This is kind of a fringe activity, dl'ing err,,,,underground gay porn off file hosts - whether free or subscribed, and the industry is (I'll make a guess) somewhat small.

Its up to us users to figure out how to do it. Looks like this requires work wading through message boards and such if things aren't working. Plenty of people do it-dl that is. I've been successful getting pretty much anything I want using a modest speed DSL line, this forum (and others) , JDownloader, and free file hosts. It may take awhile, maybe a couple of hours, and some work, especially a full length film split in 15 parts.

I hear what you say, but I must point out that paying for a download service to retrieve files has nothing to do at all with your hardware, software, electric utility bill, or your ISP. Downloaders are private, for-profit services, with membership fees. Regardless of how large or small a givenr machine or how fast or slow a connection may be, none of that confers upon any user automatic preferential service from a download site. If one wishes to download free, most offer slow downloads at no charge. Like most other things, one gets what one is willing to pay for.

Your comments sound like someone who waited in line for 6 hours to purchase a newly released gaming console, and now is asking for free game software not included or promised in the initial purchase - solely on the basis of having made the purchase and obtained what you paid for. Any merchant thus confronted would scratch their head and then smile and show you the price sticker and ask if that were cash or charge.
