Gay Chat - How much time to you spend in chat rooms?

How much time do you spend in chat rooms and how efficient is it...related to the outcome...sex/new buddies?

Very little. I used to back when computers were fairly new. The win 98SE era. Now hardly ever use chat, gay or not. I've got a MH post up and sometimes I use chat to talk with MH guys. but it seems like when I get to the point of chat, almost immediately we go to the phone. I've had pretty good luck with MH guys. Much better than cruising in bars

I casually use a couple of french language chat rooms (gay and str8) for fun. But unfortunately a %age of folks there kinda spoil it for us non-native speakers. They will say condescending things like 'Why are there so many english in here tonight?" Despite my using french not english in the room.

Aside from GH, I don't bother with any chat rooms - just not interested since I am not seeking hookups or new contacts. In general, I hear others commenting (who do visit chat rooms) that they can be very juvenile and bitch-prone. Totally not where I want to be.:no:

What is MH?

I used to spend a LOT of time in online chat rooms, but not so much lately. I blame the arrival of broadband for the fact that guys tend to enter the room and then just sit there saying nothing hoping that the man of their dreams will send them a message. When everyone was on the dialup, and most people were on a pay-per-minute plan or a time-restricted plan, they couldn't waste time just lurking; they had to make the most of their time online.

I used to try and lead the conversations, but I got tired of being the only one to make an effort at keeping the chat going. It's a bit like when you're having sex with someone, and you are the only one who is actually doing anything - after a while you think what's the point.

back when I was only 16/17, I'm totally addicted to chatrooms, but I guess doing it almost everyday slowly bores me that it came to a point that I don't do it anymore.

I actually used to go into chat rooms often; especially on AOL (even years after it went out of style)... I got tired of seeing so many offensive sides of the gay community at large; especially in one particular AOL chatroom where the same people used to throw out some of the most negative comments and spew the most acidic of venom you'll ever witness.

I deleted the AOL program and stuck with the messenger service instead and never looked back.

Gaydar can be a bit like that too, though it seems more of a problem in the local rooms (eg city-based) than in the theme rooms such as CP/Spanking.

I have to say that my time on chat sites paid dividends when I ended up visiting the UK a couple of years ago. I managed no fewer than five meetings. Ttwo were with guys I had chatted with on Gaydar, one from Gearfetish, and one from sites other than chat rooms, namely jeans fetish sites. The fifth was a guy who used to operate a very interesting web site with lots of perversions that matched my own. That meeting was one of the biggest disappointments of my life; I could not believe how different the image was from the reality. He was a nice enough guy, but there was really no chemistry between us, and I don't think it was just me - he seems to have more or less abandoned his sex-oriented lifestyle altogether.


Still, 4 out of 5 ain't bad.

From a dude whom I know well who works for a large data security firm, I learned that one of the key problems with chat rooms was that hackers and cyber-freaks quickly figured out how to hack the C++ codes used to enable the various chat features. This took the form of spreading macro programs that would enable the user to block everyone's mic except his and the ones he kept in a preferred list, or to actually collapse the program and force a reboot of a user's computer. Windows 2K and early XP versions were vulnerable to some of those bot programs. I would say that no one is really mourning the loss of chat rooms, these days. They're far too busy wanking to the vids they download from GH!:thumbs up:

For things like hooking up? Nope never I guess that era happened before I was all grown up. XD

However for chatting with others yeah I do every once in a while. I mostly use lgbt forums cause I don't live in big city and really have not rl gay experiences aside from a kiss and handyjob XD.

I don't know about gay sex-themed chat rooms, but I frequent sites like Stickam because I love to cam chat for social purposes. Great way to meet new people, and be sure that they are who they say they are, since they are right there on cam. I've met many friends that way, and I intend to meet many more!

I'm not the sort of person to seek hookups, but friends with benefits is always nice

I do miss the old Yahoo chat/cam rooms. You could just chat or put up a cam at the same time while chatting. You could also limit who saw your cam to the hot guy you were chatting with, (or put it up publicly for everyone to see your bareass).

What was cool was you could create a unique room instantaneously , like 'Hairy Gay Daddies with Big Bellies', and you'd attract guys into that kink. I guess there was too much legal trouble with Yahoo chat, they took it all down. Now its just a pale leftover of what once was. I think they might have a gay room now.

I'm slightly amused at all you people "mourning the loss of chat rooms". Just because your favourite one from years ago closed down doesn't mean there are not others. They are still around if you want to seek them out, it's just that they are no longer run by multinationals like Yahoo. Most of them are run on their own sites with their own software, and are quite secure (except for Gay Universe which has an ancient user interface, is full of security holes and I don't believe is maintained by anybody anymore, it's just that no one has bothered to switch it off).

Yahoo used to have all these groups - it's possible they still do. The problem was that they were so terrified of offending certain parts of their customer base that all it took was ONE disgruntled member to register a complaint about content, and the group would be shut down. No prior announcement, no communication with the moderator, no explanation of the reason for closure, just pull the plug. That, plus the falling cost of server space and bandwidth, is probably what has motivated others to set up their own dedicated sites, for discussion groups like this one, and focused chat rooms.

Actually what happened with Yahoo chat is the whole ability for users to create chat rooms was shut down. When I used it, I had several favorites bookmarked which others had created, and I usually started up a new one that day depending on my kinky mood. (ex 'Daddies and boys in jockstraps': 'Uniformed state troopers'; or 'Guy taking a shower')

Last time I checked , they just had a couple of generalized rooms labelled "gay" and I think one labeled "leather" . Things may have changed, I stopped using them when chat was shut down.

There were numerous rooms which flirted with the law if not totally illegal , mostly underage stuff. I was scared to even peak in the underage rooms, afraid my IP might get recorded or something. Thats why Yahoo closed it all down. Too dangerous.

BTW , My room ' guy taking a shower' was very popular and took on a life of its own. Other guys picked up on it and did the same, that is, set up a cam pointed at the shower (long cord) while they showered for an audience.
