What the hell is an Implicit Association Test (IAT)?

It is well known that people don't always 'speak their minds', and it is suspected that people don't always 'know their minds'. Understanding such divergences is important to scientific psychology.
This web site presents a method that demonstrates the conscious-unconscious divergences much more convincingly than has been possible with previous methods. This new method is called the Implicit Association Test, or IAT for short.

i went to the next stage of the sexuality test.. and stopped halfway cuz it was a biased test isnt? or is it cuz i just dont understand the purpose of the test? they kinda placed gay and the bad category together, straight and good category together.. and a gay couple picture is supposed to be in the same category as bad?
is there something im missing out here?

I hadn't done that one, since it really didn't interest me. I have my own set of ethics, morals, and boundaries. I don't impose them on others and never let others impose upon me. Learned that the hard way, as many good lessons in life are learned. If those images are set up that way, then the test has a serious bias. If there is a contact portal, and I believe there is, you should bring that up with the test folks.

Yeah, the whole point of the test. They are going to present a bunch of biased associations (eg gay/bad) to see whether you are quicker making the connection with those than with other neutral associations. That's how the test measures your prejudices.

As far as I know, categeories are switched in the second half of the test, so that gay/good and straight/bad get paired as well.
The trick is that they calculate a difference in reaction times as follows: RT(gay/bad) - RT(gay/good). For a difference near zero, you are not faster in associating gay and bad nor faster in associating gay and good. In this case, there's no prejudice against homosexuality. For a difference significantly larger than 0, you are faster making the gay/good association and therefore have positive attitude towards homosexuality. If you need more time to associate gay/good than gay/bad, you're likely to have a prejudice agains homosexuality.
