1840 The person born before all other human beings appeared in photos
Hannah Stilley, born in 1746, photographed in 1840. According to some sources, she is the oldest person, in the sense of being born before, to have been 'photographed' on film.

Was she still alive when photographed? I ask not because of her appearance but because I came across somewhere that in the pioneering early days of photography they did not have scruples about posing dead people to be photographed.

It's true. I happened to see photographs taken of dead people and posing as if they were alive. I could even upload them, but I do not know if their publication on the forum would be accepted.
Being 94 years old in 1840 was a very rare but not impossible fact. I think the only reason why this absolutely unknown woman was photographed depends on being so old. An exceptional thing to the point of being handed down to posterity with a photo.

1939 - The last capital execution with the guillotine in France
Eugène Weidmann was the last criminal to have been publicly executed with the guillotine. It was June 17, 1939. He was guilty of various kidnappings and murders.
The last execution of the death penalty, again by guillotine but privately, dates back to 10 September 1977. In 1981 France abolished the death penalty.

It wasn't a matter of scruples, it was the fact that in those days photos were rare and expensive. For most families it was the only chance of having an image to remember a loved one who had died.

Probably the best time to take their only pictures too since it took prolonged exposure to register but still, staging with dead humans had to involve some element of qualm.

Ha! My mom has one of these but it is black. I don't think she has added a name to it in my lifetime, but I still use it too from time to time to get phone numbers and address' of the family that I don't have.

Back in the 60's encyclopedias were a necessity. I sold my 1964 set with 7-yearbooks on Ebay a couple of years ago for $150.00

My grandparents on my mothers side have like five sets of Encyclopedia Britannica in one of the guest bedrooms. When I was younger I always enjoyed pulling one off the shelf and reading it. I could sometimes find some really interesting and crazy stuff. I guess that was the prequel to Wikipedia.

Who here can identify these?

I ask because one of the college kids at work found one stashed under the counter and had no idea what the fuck it was...

Funny! It must have been a pain to use a credit card back in the day. I thought it was a pain when we had to start "inserting" our cards that had chips rather than just sliding them through the machine.

Another thing I've seen at my grandparents. I think I was in 9th or 10th grade and when I was at their house doing a report for school, I asked if I could use their computer and they said it wasn't working. So they hauled this thing out instead and said I could use it instead. I looked at them like "are you serious". After hearing that this was all that they got to use, reluctantly I pounded out my report on it. It was a pain!
