This evening 15 April 2019 the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, France, is going up in flames in a violent fire :(X_X:(

I've seen the pictures from Swedish TV - it's absolutely horrible. I'm so sad.

It seems the fire started at about 6.30 PM tonight and the theory I've heard is that there was reparatory construction work going on. Maybe some machinery giving some sparks and - ka-boom - you've got 800 years old wooden structures starting to burn. Horrible X_X

The burnt part is the roof and the spire. The wooden structure of these parts of the building is not contemporary to the structure of the church walls (XII century) but was built between 1845 and 1864. In those years the cathedral underwent a radical transformation that gave the church its current neo-Gothic style.
This does not make less painful the sadness for the destruction of a monument that represents a universal heritage for all humanity.

It's good to get a confirmation from a competent engineer (golfdelta21) that the wood constructions seems to be the source of the problems, even though the problematic constructions aren't from the 12th century, but from the mid 19th century. (Or to be more precise on the source of the problems: The wood constructions + damaged electric cablage.)

But the precise age of the wood constructions burning doesn't really matter - it's horrible and horribly sad anyway. :(:(:(

Robert Doisneau was one of my favourite French photographers. His pictures are often so full of a particular surrealist wit & I love his work very much. Thanks my friend for this post :thumbs up:
