Same as when they talk of Italy before the unification. See this glaring anachronism in the famous quote from The Third Man of Orson Welles:

Harry Lime: Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Holly.

Five hundred years of peace and 'brotherly love', made us realize how terrible and cruel the wars are. Seeing the thousands of Italian, French and Austro-Hungarian soldiers dead and wounded on Italian battlefields during the Second War of Independence in 1859, a Swiss citizen created the Red Cross in 1864. Something that no 'genius' had ever thought of creating, perhaps because they were too busy on the battlefields.

Being a neutral and peaceful nation does not mean being naive and unwary.
Therefore, Switzerland has one of the most fearsome and efficient armies in the world. Even Israel's army, considered the best in the world, is based on the Swiss model.
The Latin quote 'Si vis pacem, para bellum'(in English means 'If you want peace, prepare for war) represents the guideline for defense of my country.

Not fighting more wars from 5 centuries, the Swiss had much free time.
Some Swiss citizen has used this time to do some major scientific discovery that has improved the world.
Other citizens, more simply, were dedicated to improving the living conditions of all Swiss
I do not know if there is a Paradise in the afterlife. Of course, on Earth, there is a place that looks like a Paradise. It's called Switzerland.
So, no great geniuses are needed to create beautiful things!

I think that the man who initiated the Red Cross deserves an explicit mention: His name was Henri Dunant (1828-1910) and what became the immediate background for the founding of this very important organization was the very, very, very bloody battle of Solferino in 1859, fought between France and Sardinia-Piemonte on the one side and the Habsburg empire on the other.

Dunant wrote the important book Memories of Solferino, published in 1862 and the Red Cross was formally founded in february 1863.

He was awarded the first Nobel Peace Price in 1901.

Loaded with sugar then, loaded with sweeteners now but at least it contained real cocaine in its early days.
