"Elephant Angel"

Denise Austin with Shelia the baby elephant, the older woman is Irene Austin, her mother.

Denise Austin was the first female zoo keeper at the zoo in Belfast, Ireland. During WWII out of fear that German bombing raids would free dangerous animals, the authorities ordered them all destroyed. To protect Shelia the elephant, Austin hid her in the walled up garden behind her house.
