United Nations Officially Recognizes LGBT People For the First Time - Ever

United Nations, New York City, NY, USA - Friday 17 June 2011

Friday, the United Nations passed its very first resolution based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The resolution concludes that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be extended to include LGBT individuals, declaring that there should be no violence or discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This historic resolution was presented by South Africa and Brazil with 39 additional co-sponsors from around the world.

Dawn Cavanagh from Coalition of African Lesbians said:

“The South African government has now offered progressive leadership, after years of troubling and inconsistent positions on the issue of sexual orientation and gender identity. Simultaneously, the government has set a standard for themselves in international spaces. We look forward to contributing to and supporting sustained progressive leadership by this government and seeing the end of the violations we face daily.”

Justus Eisfeld, Co Director of GATE said:

“The Human Rights Council has taken a step forward in history by acknowledging that both sexual and gender non-conformity make lesbian, gay, trans and bi people among those most vulnerable and indicated decisively that states have an obligation to protect us from violence.”

Maurizio Cecconi reports that “the resolution requests the High Commissioner for Human Rights to prepare a study on violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, and calls for a panel discussion to be held at the Human Rights Council to discuss the findings of the study in a constructive and transparent manner, and to consider appropriate follow-up.” This report and a plenary panel are scheduled for next March.

States supporting the resolution: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Guatemala, Hungary, Japan, Mauritius, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Republic of Korea, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, Thailand, UK, USA, Uruguay

States against the resolution: Angola, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Djibouti, Gabon, Ghana, Jordan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, Moldova, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Uganda.

Abstentions: Burkina Faso, China, Zambia

Excellent - delighted to see this, and also relieved to see the US is a co-sponsor - not sure that would have been possible under a Republican administration. I guess this'll give those on the right against the very concept of the UN something new to work themselves into a lather about :)

I'm also happy to see both my home countries signing on as co-sponsors (Belgium & Ireland).

Are those lists complete? There seems to be a lot of countries not mentioned who I thought would have been UN members.

Jamaica and Lithuania come to mind, two countries that have a reputation for homophobia.

And yet they have a huge community of LGBT in their countries and diaspora.

Uganda is definitely one of the worst, LGBT lives in precarious conditions, they are treated like they're all suffering from the black plague and live in horrible ghetto which nothing is permitted to them, poor hygiene because electricity doesn't reach the place they live and they have to wash their clothes in a river that they use for other needs too (just imagine what else they do in that water). These people are not sick, they're just gay. They could participate in the country's economics but yet their government believe that they are not worthy of maintaining a job. The people in Uganda are also extremely homophobic with comments such as -"we should kill those people, because they can't procreate if they fuck each other in the ass or a girl lick another girl's pussy." In all countries of Africa, this is definitely the worst country to be gay.

Isn't it Uganda that is progressing a law through parlaiment to condemn gay people to life imprisonment, and to give out prison terms for failing to report someone who is gay to the police? This as a 'compromise' from the original proposal of simply killing them!

Yes that's them! I believe there's a limit to being homophobic and Uganda crossed those limits ten folds:angry:

Uganda struggled so long in abject terror under Amin's oppression, yet they continue to oppress each other due to gender and orientation bias. What on earth are they thinking............or are they even thinking at all!

Re: Western/EU Countries

Interesting support was in Western/EU Countries and opposition was centered in African/Muslim Countries.

Sorry to say, but most of those who doesn't recognizes LGBT people are mostly developing countries or countries with strong conservative culture.

A very good thing. Unfortunately, most of what the UN does and says is not honored by most of it's members. Hopefully this will add some sort of legal precedent to the issue.
