So I posted a video on YouTube and I figured I was in a grey area with the copyrights. I just liked the song and wanted to upload it. They told me there were issues with the copyright and that it isn't viewable in some countries. I said okay so I clicked the link to read more and they said this...

As a result, your video is blocked worldwide.

What should I do?

No action is required on your part. Your video is still available worldwide.


What does that mean. I can only view it if I'm logged into the account that uploaded it. Its not the end of the world. just got me curious as to what it meant.

I sent the link to someone else and it didn't work. I guess I could post it and see if other countries can view it. They didn't take it down just block it (concerned about getting into trouble haha the music industry can be so bitchy).

YouTube have software installed that automatically detects copyrighted works used in a video, and automatically takes action. The owners of copyrighted music and video can choose what that automated action should be, should the video be blocked, should it be allowed, or should it be allowed but with ads who's revenue goes to the owner of the copyright. It seems like the music you are infringing is owned by someone who has chosen to block their content on YouTube.

You have viacom to blame for this, since it was them who tried to sue Youtube for something like 100billion dollars over copyright infringement, and this technological solution was part of the settlement. There are some problems with it, because it doesn't make any allowance for fair use, but this is the reality copyright holders have forced on YouTube.

The YouTube avenue is simply closed to you for this video. You can either host it yourself on a server you control and risk being sued, or you can try alternative video hosts and hope no one puts in a DMCA take-down request against your video.

I think I will take it down (they didn't take it down just blocked it form being viewed by anyone but me while I'm logged in)

Its no big deal. Just figured if they allow it cool if they don't its whatever.
