I know at least 2 books have been written this subject lately. Mostly Straight: Sexual Fluidity among Men and Not Gay: Sex between Straight White Men. I think most of us all know that HIV AIDS organisations have been targeting MSM.

It's long been known some men who identify themselves as straight engage in homosexual activity. Variously described as downlow or bicurious. I'm sure most of us can attest to being cruised by up until then seemingly straight guys, as well as some degree of sexual experience with other boys at a younger age who would end up marrying women and living as heterosexuals.

I think these straight identifying men tend to look for straight guys in gay porn more than men who identify as gay. Of course within gay men there is also a clear category of masculine4masculine, no fems, a dislike for effeminate men in general but in particular when it comes to sex.

Men are socialised for masculine ideals regardless of their sexuality. Manliness is valued highly. Femininity is bad and undesirable in men. Gay men are feminine. That is still what societies at large push into every human brain every day. Just go out as a man with colored nails or a hot pink shirt and you will be stared at, maybe even get comments of aggression or ridicule. Hold hands or kiss another man and you are at higher risk of physical, violent attacks. If a man doesn't conform to masculinity he will be policed and punished by society one or way or another.

To begin with homophobia is present in most people to a degree until they question it. The general view is men who identify as straight are on average more homophobic than those who identify as gay. It stands to reason they are more likely to look for straight guys in gay porn.

I think any of the tree options is possible:thinking: I think the whole subject of the thread is complicated, since it feels like it's in the eye of the beholder. Women say "all good looking guys are either gay or taken" and gay men say "all good looking guys are straight". I don't agree with either one

That's because a lot of the 'gay' (or 'boy's love/yayoi...) porn/manga/books etc. in Japan is made for an audience of straight women, not gay men.

Personally, I don't fantasize about straight guys or find stereo-typically heterosexual/'masculine' traits attractive. I'd rather see 'real gay boys' I like our culture.

Perhaps the apparent pervading presence then of this porn genre is economically justifiable because of its wider appeal. It caters to gay men and straight women alike. I doubt though whether it would be profitable if it were aimed exclusively at straight Japanese women alone.
