Seeing ads for the 7th season of BLACK MIRROR, I realised that I still hadn't got around to watching seasons 4, 5 & 6 so I have started the catch-up. Each excellent season has between 3 and 6 stand-alone episodes usually with a dystopian feel based around technology; social-media. Andrew Scott and Anthony Mackie feature in season 4. Dark tales from the mind of Charlie Brooker

MurderBot (2025-)

A security android struggles with emotions and free will while balancing dangerous missions and desire for isolation, evading detection of its self-hacking as it finds its place. To stay hidden, it reluctantly joins a new mission protecting scientists on a dangerous planet... even though it just wants to binge soap operas.

I'm 2 episodes into this comedy/sci-fi/action and looks like I will be grabbing the next 8 episodes once they drop. Alexander Skarsgård stars as the Bot.

BBC 1954 live TV performance of 1984
This is the definitive dramatisation of the most important book of the 20th century, pisses all over that later movie with the dreadful Annie Lennox song in it, which was also ruined by being in colour.
Black and white is essential to keep up the sinister aura. This recording is hard, almost impossible, to find, I had to stream it from Russia, that bastion of freedom, which would amuse George Orwell were he still around. Disturbing, frightening, worrying, that is what it is meant to be. Watch it if you dare.
There is also an American TV version from 1953, it is on youtube. This one is short, low budget and misses a lot out. Interesting but weak once you have seen the BBC version, like Bud Lite after Polish vodka.

MOBLAND (2025 - )

Harry Da Souza is called upon to make a problem disappear after a night out goes awry for the sons of two warring crime families. As boss Richie Stevenson looks to pin blame, patriarch Conrad Harrigan gathers his clan with a plan.

So Guy Ritchie directs and the cast list has Tom Hardy; Pierce Brosnan; Helen Mirren; Paddy Constantine. I just watched the 1st episode and definitely will be watching all 10 as they become available.

I watched the 1st episode 2 weeks ago to see if I was going to be interested in grabbing the rest as they drop each week and it was definite yes. So far there are 8 out of the 10 episodes are available and I re-watched Ep.1 tonight to remind me of what had happened then I watched Eps. 2 & 3.

These people are nasty vicious violent revenge fueled bastards ..... I'm loving it!

I am now up to Ep 6 and loving it, so many twists and turns. I am totally gripped by this excellent show. Where will this plot go? How will it end. Who will still be alive? Will anyone still be alive?..... and I still have 4 more adrenalin fuelled episodes to go!

Well I have watched the last 4 episodes and I have to say I was glad I had them all on the USB 'cos having to wait a week between each one would have been torture. Some jaw dropping endings and several WTF? moments to keep me glued to the screen as the body count kept rising. There were a few times when I just thought "Where the fuck is this plot going now?" double dealing; double crossing; family secrets... and smouldering violence. I sat down with a large Bushmills 15yr old single malt and savoured it as the finale unfolded. The performances were excellent, but you would expect that from the likes of Pierce Brosnan; Paddy Considine & Tom Hardy. Special mention for Helen Mirren who is superb as the manipulative fearsome matriarch, Maeve. If only more tv was like this - maybe a lot is and I just missed it?

One little negative. Eddie, played by Anson Boon spent much of his screen time lounging about in a dressing-gown. Pity they didn't write his character lounging about in a pair of snug fitting Calvins - but you can't have everything..... maybe in Season 2 (if there is one)

PILE UP

In an audacious experiment, unwitting members of the public join a high-speed pile-up as auto experts investigate car safety. Thanks to cutting edge engineering, no one is ever in danger. From Channel 4 here in the UK. staging a multi-car pile-up and enlisting four drivers to remotely control real cars. The results are striking and the aftermath is fascinating as the crash scene is pored over and the extent of the (thankfully hypothetical) injuries is assessed.

An entertaining and interesting 90min doc.umentary.

I finished MurderBot at just the right time as Eps 1-6 of The Sandman season 2 are out and Eps 7-11 should drop in a week's time and the finale episode 7 days after that. I had a quick catch-up of the multi-pathed plot from the 1st season then I watched the first 3 ep of season 2 last night and I have to say at one point I thought of switching off as the pacing went a bit flat but I stuck with it and was glad I did as the plot then got back on track and I was enjoying it as much as I had season 1. As before the production values are very high with some stunning visuals.

I have been watching Sandman Season 2 this week but left the last episode until the "finale" episode is dropped later today so I can watch them back to back. So that gave me the opportunity to give this a watch.

Keeley Hawes & Freddie Highmore star in this action/comedy/thriller? The plot is ludicrous and unbelievable and some of the acting is poor but it's kinda fun for all that. I smiled when the soundtrack went into a (deliberate?) James Bond riff.

OPERATION DARK PHONE : MURDER BY TEXT (2025)

The incredible inside story of a huge police operation to infiltrate dangerous global crime gangs through their encrypted phone network Channel4

The description above from the UK's Channel 4 sums up this programme. A compelling and fascinating doc.umentary. Hacking the network was a breakthrough but not the end of the game as although they could read all the messages it wasn't in real time, there was a delay. Additionally the messages were rarely specific enough as to a particular planned crime; the time and place etc and of course nobody used their real names so knowing that "luxuryballon" was getting hold of a gun or guns to pass on to "tyrionlassiter" was only the start of the puzzle. The other issue being when you have established exactly what is going on how do you deal with it without revealing to the criminal underworld that you are secretly reading all their messages

I watched the first of the 4 programmes in the series and was hooked. This mainly dealt with organisations in the UK but over the rest of them they featured some work done in Europe involving police forces in France and The Netherlands before following drugs shipped from the UK to Australia.
