So this is Guillermo Del Toro's telling of the classic gothic novel and what to say.... Guillermo won Oscars for best picture for The Shape Of Water and Pinocchio and I didn't like either of them, finding them boring so I'm wondering if this is a "Best Picture" material too - 'cos I didn't like this one either.

TWINLESS (2025)

A young man grieving the loss of his twin brother joins a support group for "twinless twins." Imdb

Where to start. Well there are excellent performances from Dylan O'Brien and James Sweeney (who also wrote & directed). I don't want to say much about the plot and happily the trailer does not give too much away. You could call this a strong drama with some gay interest; or a heavy satire; there is some laugh-out-loud dialogue coupled with some dark themes.

There is a quote in the trailer from a New York Times review "From here the less you know the better" I agree, watch the trailer but better not to read anymore about it.... just grab a copy and give it a watch.

I won't be surprised if it gets on the award nominations. Recommended

Based upon extensive research with law enforcement, gangs, inmates, migrants, and addicts, an exposé on fentanyl trafficking, and its effect on all walks of life. Imdb

In it's 2hr 10min run time it covers a lot of ground, from the various in-fighting gangs smuggling; manufacturing and distributing to the drug squad cops tasked with bringing them down. It makes an entertaining watch overall.

After a devastating loss, witty and proudly troublesome Eleanor Morgenstein, 94, tells a tale that takes on its own dangerous life. Imdb

This melancholic drama is touching, heart warming, poignant and highly emotional. June Squibb is excellent and well supported by Erin Kellyman and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It is the directorial debut of Scarlett Johansson and I found the pace very slow.

Looks like Michael Mando (Nacho, from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) is once again playing a drug dealer. He was really good in both those shows.

Weapons (2025)

After about the 5th viewing, I began seeing similarities to the Japanese film Rashomon as far as storytelling.
Some of the events in Weapons are not only shown from different angles, but from different perspectives.
Very well done. And it features one of the biggest jump scares of the year.

At the beginning of the movie, the first thing you'll ask yourself is, can Bill Skarsgard (the guy who played the killer clown Pennywise in IT) be trusted.

I watched this around the same time I watched director Zach Cregger's other film, Weapons.

This has been on the free section of Rakut3nTv for a while so I thought I'd better give it a watch before they take it down. It's a typical Jason Statham movie. The plot is a little overcomplicated but it's the usual mix of shooty; stabby; punchy; slashy; kicky stuff with car chases that we have come to expect.

THE ACCOUNTANT 2 (2025)

Christian Wolff applies his brilliant mind and illegal methods to reconstruct the unsolved puzzle of a Treasury chief's murder. Imdb

The much anticipated sequel is like many sequels not as good as the first. The performances from Ben Affleck; John Bernthal & Cynthia Addai-Robinson are fine but the plot is all over the place and so is the pacing.

GANYMEDE (2023)

After a small-town wrestling star develops a crush on an openly gay classmate, he is stalked by a grotesque creature that invades his thoughts as he navigates his feelings and struggles to live up to his legacy-obsessed family. Imdb

Oh dear - it means well and tries hard but lacklustre acting and a over-the-top last half our gets it a thumbs down.... even the eye-candy can't save it.

A group of desperate migrants reach the Italian coast after a perilous Mediterranean journey, impacting locals and tourists in a small coastal town. Imdb

An interesting movie which looks at a controversial subject from the viewpoint of all concerned. Maybe it went a little over the top towards the end though?

An enjoyable Sth Korean drama/thriller.... enjoyable? yes..... does it get more tense as it goes along? yes.... does it get totally bonkers eventually? Oh yes

URCHIN (2025)

A young addict living on the streets of London is given a shot at redemption, but his road to recovery soon curdles into a strange odyssey from which he may never escape. Imdb

A powerful look at those on the margins of society. Harris Dickinson has his debut as both writer and director. There is not a huge amount of plot and the bleakness of some of it can be uncompromising so not a Friday night beer & pizza movie.... but the outstanding performance from Frank Dillane drags you in.

I am a Stephen King fan and I LOVED the novel and have re-read it several times - I just hope the movie does it justice? Some movie adaptations of books are good - others are terrible

BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER (2025)

When his past and his debts start to catch up with him, a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation Imdb

Just a teaser trailer so as not to give too much away. I really enjoyed this (and not just because the last two movies I watched were bleak uncompromising films). It's an intriguing plot and beautifully filmed, okay when you have Macau and Hong Kong as your backdrop that shouldn't be hard but even so the cinematography shines through. As to the cast Colin Farrell puts in a fantastic performance...
