The one song that will bring tears to my eyes is by Mike and the Mechanics - "The Living Years". Here's a clip of it on youtube:

One of those songs that makes me teary, even though it's a dance track. To all of those who know me here... let's just say there was someone around that made me live this song for years.

No, he didn't pick me.

Brings back memories sometimes, but I have moved on. Still might have been nice if he did choose me, though. :(

Is there a fire in the sky is there a moon up there
Is there anything alive now this darkness is what I hear
This is a breathless silence a moment out of time
I see your face in the shadows the tell tale signs are in your eyes
More than I can hold in my hands running through the cracks like water
Aching with a passion inside as deep as the river

[chorus]
All desire the ashes and the fire
Turning the night inside and the light from you

Is there a flame in the dark is there a bright hard star
These creatures look the same now
We freeze wherever we are
We wake alone in blackness
We sleep wherever we fall
One dream all around us this big hush infects us all
Holding up on animal fear soaking up the waves underwater
Turned to music no one can hear
Forever in this half lit light

[chorus X2]

I was just posting about this artist in the "Songs You're Listening To" thread and now, I'm sharing the one track from the hip-hop genre that has ever touched me to tears.

I remember seeing this video not long after Tupac Shakur died. In the video, there are many images of this man: the angry side, the peaceful side, happy, sad, hopeful... I listened to the very strong words as he spoke them... and before I realized what was going on, a sea of tears slid down my face. I actually don't listen to this song often as it still causes a strong emotion within me. The song itself, about hoping for difference within our hectic lives is sadly never outdated. There is always negativity thrown our ways when you're in any sense or minority. The lyrics are honest and raw... they will make you think.

The very last line of the final verse is sadly prophetic... I'll post the lyrics after the video. Sh*t... I'm a bit teary now. It really is quite the powerful song.

Here's "Changes" by 2Pac.

Lyrics:

Come on; come on

I see no changes; wake up in the morning and I ask myself
Is life worth living; should I blast myself?
I'm tired of bein' poor and even worse I'm black
My stomach hurts so I'm lookin' for a purse to snatch
Cops give a damn about a negro
Pull the trigger; kill a nigga, he's a hero
Give the crack to the kids; who the Hell cares
One less hungry mouth on the welfare
First ship 'em dope and let 'em deal the brothers
Give 'em guns; step back watch 'em kill each other
It's time to fight back; that's what Huey said
Two shots in the dark, now Huey's dead
I got love for my brother but we can never go nowhere
Unless we share with each other
We gotta start makin' changes
Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers
And that's how it's supposed to be
How can the devil take a brother if he's close to me?
I'd love to go back to when we played as kids
But things changed, and that's the way it is

[Chorus]

That's just the way it is
Things will never be the same
That's just the way it is
Oh yeah

[Repeat]

I see no changes; all I see is racist faces
Misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under I wonder what it takes to make this
One better place, let's erase the wasted
Take the evil out; the people they'll be acting right
Cause both black and white is smokin' crack tonight
And only time we chill is when we kill each other
It takes skill to be real; time to heal each other
And although it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to see a black President
It ain't a secret; don't conceal the fact
The penitentiary's packed and it's filled with blacks
But some things will never change
Try to show another way but you stayin' in the dope game
Now tell me what's a mother to do; bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you
You gotta operate the easy way
(I made a G today)
But you made it in a sleazy way
Sellin' crack to the kid.
(I gotta get paid)
Well hey, well that's the way it is

[Chorus]

[Talking:]
We gotta make a change
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
And let's change the way we treat each other
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do what we gotta do to survive

And still I see no changes; can't a brother get a little peace
It's war on the streets and the war in the Middle East
Instead of war on poverty, they got a war on drugs
So the police can bother me
And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do
But now, I'm back with the facts; givin' it back to you
Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up,
Crack you up and pimp smack you up
You gotta learn to hold ya own
They get jealous when they see ya with your mobile phone
But tell the cops they can't touch this
I don't trust this when they try to rush, I bust this
That's the sound of my tool; you say it ain't cool
My mama didn't raise no fool
And as long as I stay black, I gotta stay strapped
And I never get to lay back
'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs
Some punk that I roughed up way back
comin' back after all these years
Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat; that's the way it is

[Chorus]

Some things will never change

I think I may have posted this already, but I'm not sure....

Anyway, we've all been unlucky in love but sometimes, we feel like we're the only one who goes through that hurt. I've had many bad things happen to me on that search for the "right one" and sometimes, it's my fault... I'm still looking for someone strong enough to hang throughout the pain and see me for the guy I really am.

There's a song by TLC called "Damaged" that probably fits this perfectly. I usually lose it around the second bridge. T-Boz is singing and Chilli is pretty much stretching out what's already been said, but it's something about the sadness in her voice that touches me. The entire song (and the video accompanying it) is pretty powerful...

Here's "Damaged"... now if you'll excuse me, I might actually start crying now, so I'll just share the video and lyrics... I'll bold the section I'm referring to.

Lyrics:

I know I'm kinda strange to you sometimes
Don't always say what's on my mind
You know that I've been hurt by some guy
But I don't wanna mess up this time

[BRIDGE]
And I really really really care
And I really really really want you
And I think I'm kinda scared
'Cause I don't want to lose you
If you really really really care
Then maybe you can hang through
I hope you understand
It's nothing to you

[CHORUS]

My heart's at a low
I'm so much to manage
I think you should know that
I've been damaged
I'm falling in love
There's one disadvantage
I think you should know that I've been damaged

I might look through your stuff for what I don't wanna find
Or I might just set you up to see if you're all mine
I'm a little paranoid from what I've been through
Don't know what you got yourself into

And I really really really care (And I care about you so much)
And I really really really want you (I really do want you)
And I think I'm kinda scared (But I'm scared with every touch)
Cos I don't want to lose you (Cos I don't want to lose you)
If you really really really care (If you care for me like you say)
Then maybe you can hang through (Then maybe you can hang through)
I hope you understand (I hope you understand)
It's nothing to you (It's nothing to do with you) :(

My heart's at a low (low)
I'm so much to manage
I think you should know that (I think you should know)
I've been damaged
I'm falling in love (I'm falling in love)
There's one disadvantage
I think you should know that I've been damaged (I think you should know that)

My heart's at a low
I'm so much to manage (I'm so much to manage)
I think you should know that (I think you should know that)
I've been damaged (I've been damaged)
I'm falling in love (I love you so)
There's one disadvantage (I love you so)
I think you should know that I've been damaged

And I really really really want you
And I think I'm kinda scared
Cos I don't want to lose you
If you really really really care
Then maybe you can hang through
I hope you understand
It's nothing to you (It's nothing to you)

My heart's at a low
I'm so much to manage
I think you should know that (Ooh I think you should know I've been damaged)
I've been damaged (I've been damaged baby)
I'm falling in love (Falling in love with you baby, yeah)
There's one disadvantage
I think you should know that I've been damaged

My heart's at a low
I'm so much to manage
I think you should know that
I've been damaged
I'm falling in love
There's one disadvantage
I think you should know that I've been damaged

When the day is done and the ball has spun in the umpires pocket away
And all remains in the groundsman's pains for the rest of the time and a day
There'll be one mad dog and his master, pushing for four with the spin
On a dusty pitch with two pounds six of willow wood in the sun.

When an old cricketer leaves the crease, you never know whether he's gone
If sometimes you're catching a fleeting glimpse of a twelfth man at silly Mid-on
And it could be Geoff and it could be John with a new ball sting in his tail
And it could be me and it could be thee and it could be the sting in the ale, the sting in the ale.

When an old cricketer leaves the crease, well you never know whether he's gone
If sometimes you're catching a fleeting glimpse of a twelfth man at silly Mid-on
And it could be Geoff and it could be John with a new ball sting in his tail
And it could be me and it could be thee and it could be the sting in the ale, the sting in the ale.

When the moment comes and the gathering stands and the clock turns back to reflect
On the years of grace as those footsteps trace for the last time out of the act
Well this way of life's recollection, the hallowed strip in the haze
The fabled men and the noonday sun are much more than just yarns of their days.

When an old cricketer leaves the crease, well you never know whether he's gone
If sometimes you're catching a fleeting glimpse of a twelfth man at silly Mid-on
And it could be Geoff and it could be John with a new ball sting in his tail
And it could be me and it could be thee.

As a matter of fact, Paul Kelly's song "Bradman" also gives me a bit of a lump in the throat, even though I know bugger all about cricket and never watch it or listen to it. There is just something about Kelly's way with words, particularly the last verse.

Sydney, 1926, this is the story of a man
Just a kid in from the sticks, just a kid with a plan
St George took a gamble, played him in first grade
Pretty soon that young man showed them how to flash the blade
And at the age of nineteen he was playing for the State
From Adelaide to Brisbane, the runs did not abate
He hit 'em hard, he hit 'em straight

He was more than just a batsman
He was something like a tide
He was more than just one man
He could take on any side
They always came for Bradman 'cause fortune used to hide in the palm of his hand

A team came out from England
Wally Hammond wore his felt hat like a chief
All through the summer of '28, '29 they gave the greencaps no relief
Some reputations came to grief
They say the darkest hour is right before the dawn
And in the hour of greatest slaughter the great avenger is being born
But who then could have seen the shape of things to come
In Bradman's first test he went for eighteen and for one
They dropped him like a gun
Now big Maurice Tate was the trickiest of them all
And a man with a wisecracking habit
But there's one crack that won't stop ringing in his ears
"Hey Whitey, that's my rabbit"
Bradman never forgot it

He was more than just a batsman
He was something like a tide
He was more than just one man
He could take on any side
They always came for Bradman 'cause fortune used to hide in the palm of his hand

England, 1930 ... and the seed burst into flower
All of Jackson's grace failed him, it was Bradman was the power
He murdered them in Yorkshire, he danced for them in Kent
He laughed at them in Leicestershire, Leeds was an event
Three hundred runs he took and rewrote all the books
That really knocked those gents
The critics could not comprehend this nonchalant phenomenon
"Why this man is a machine," they said. "Even his friends say he isn't human"
Even friends have to cut something.

He was more than just a batsman
He was something like a tide
He was more than just one man
He was half the side
Fathers used to take their sons 'cause fortune used to hide in the palm of his hand, in the palms of his hands.

Summer, 1932 ... and Captain Douglas had a plan
When Larwood bowled to Bradman it was more than man to man
And staid Adelaide nearly boiled over as rage ruled over sense
When Bert Oldfield hit the ground they nearly jumped the fence
Now Bill Woodfill was as fine a man as ever went to wicket
And the bruises on his body that day showed that he could stick it
But to this day he's still quoted and only he could wear it
"There's two sides out there today and only one of them's playing cricket."

He was longer than a memory, and bigger than a town
He feet they used to sparkle and he always kept them on the ground
Fathers took their sons who never lost the sound of the roar of the grandstand.

Now shadows they grow longer and there's so much more yet to be told
But we're not getting any younger, so let the part tell the whole
Now the players all wear colours, the circus is in town
I can no longer go down there, down to that sacred ground

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but now it's come to distances and both of us must try,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time,
walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
it's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
