A Suggestion for Improving the Search Function

This suggestion applies particularly to searches for models in 'Picture Sets'. The present system suffers from the inability to search for 3 letter words and it's amazing how many, particularly Asian, names have only 3 letters. It would also aid posters in their searches to prevent double posts as each set would have a unique name.
The start point is a 'decode' list which specifies an abbreviation for every website. So, for example, you might have: Aab, AB, AlxB, etc. The full name of the site would have to be disguised or appear as a .jpg. The full searchable name then becomes, for example, Aab_Tom.
Of course, every poster would have to use the system and this might be problematic at first, but if it's made mandatory people would quickly get used to the common 'decodes' that they use.
If this suggestion meets with any sort of approval, I'd be happy to make a start on drafting a 'decode' list.
A hotkey to 'Advanced Search' might be the icing on the cake.

Hi squiggle,
try searching for (example) aab* to get three letter results!

I must admit that does work. Using 'ton' as an example brings up 50 hits. That's not a search function; that's a "please have an inspired guess" function.

Making all three letter words searchable is too heavy for the server. If you want, please send me a list of 3 letter words that could be useful for search and I'll add them to the search function. However it will only apply on new threads or threads that have been edited after the change.

It would help if posters stuck to plain English. For example, spelling Cadinot 'c4d1n0t' does not help a search engine find the right results.

I too have found searching for certain 'things' quite difficult...particularly with things like 'pbm'.

There still remains one problem: words in other languages. What about accents?

The English word "boys" is in French "garçons" (I hope it is clear that I typed a character "c" with a "cedilla" at the bottom of it). the "c-cedilla" (ç) is pronounced as "s". So I didn't find films of Cadinot when I looked for "garçons" (as it ought to be). In the contrary, I had to look for "garcons" and for "garsons".

You have to know it... :worried:
