The Corvette's future looked bleak after the manufactures ban on sponsored racing in 1957. But GM styling vice president, Bill Mitchell was determined to keep the Vette alive and paid out of his own pocket to develop the Stingray in secret. Based on 1957 Corvette SS LeMans racer, Peter Brock, GM's youngest stylist designed the body. Not only was the car good enough to keep the Vette alive, but the design was a major influence on the 1963 C2 Corvette. Bill Mitchell used the Stingray as his personal vehicle. The car was also used in the Elvis Presley movie "Clambake"...
