De voormalige Amerikaanse president George Bush senior en zijn vrouw Barbara Bush waren afgelopen weekeinde de officiële getuigen tijdens het huwelijk van twee bevriende vrouwen.

Dat heeft een woordvoerder woensdag gezegd.
Dat gebeurde in Maine, een van de dertien staten waar het homohuwelijk mogelijk is. Een van de vrouwen zette een foto van Bush op Facebook, waarop de republikeinse oud-president de trouwakte tekent.
Opvallend is dat zijn zoon George Bush junior, in de periode dat hij president was, altijd tegen wetten gestemd heeft die het homohuwelijk mogelijk moesten maken.
Uit een enquête, gehouden in juli, bleek dat 66 procent van de republikeinen in Amerika tegen het homohuwelijk is.

President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush attended and witnessed the wedding of friends in a same-sex ceremony in Maine this past weekend.
Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, who own HB Provisions, a Kennebunk, Maine, general store, got the former president’s official stamp of approval despite the fact that Bush has not officially declared his position on same sex-marriage.
“This has been a wonderful wedding experience for us and we were honored to have President and Mrs. Bush not only in attendance but also happy to sign our license,” Thorgalsen, who is with her wife on their honeymoon in London, told ABC News.
“As Nancy Sosa, our officiant, said, ‘God did not make a love that is wrong.’ If we can make a difference in the world with our wedding and marriage, we are thrilled,” she added.
Thorgalsen posted a photo of Bush signing the marriage license on Facebook over the weekend.
“They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends,” said Bush spokesman Jim McGrath.
Same-sex marriage was made legal in Maine in December 2012.

The Bushes are interesting. I don't think they were racist or homophobic in their personal lives, but both senior and junior used those fears in their presidential campaigns.

Tonka, I am not an American, so I do not know much about their personal lives. But I do think that is people like them (famous, influencial in pollitics, roll models for others etc.) do a thing like this other people will think about it AND hopefuly think/chance their own ideas about a topic like this So I think it was great GB sr and his wife did this
