NSU Prinz 1000 TT - 1966



Rear transversal engine 4 aligned cylinders, air cooled. Foreground, overhead camshaft and ignition.

A sophisticated mechanical with the differential, a cylindrical couple, under the motor.

If you need more room for the luggage, there is the 1200 with a wheelbase 19 centimeters longer between the door and the front wheel.

A little Chevrolet Corvair, like a lot of cars of this age.

K 70, the NSU that became Volkswagen


At the end of the 60's, the German constructor NSU thinked to complete its old range Prinz-1200 with rear motor by some new models Front Wheels Drive. First, it was the RO 80 in 1968, then the K 70 : RO for rotative motors Wankel, K for alternative pistons motors. But, in 1969, NSU got bought by Volkswagen who created the group Audi-NSU before the hypothetical K 70 launch. Volkswagen didn't want to embarrass the Audi make with this model.

Finally, K 70 appeared on our roads with the Volkswagen logo only in 1971.

K 70 is not the first VW Front Wheels Drive but rather the last NSU.


The motor is water cooled. The look is like the one of the 1000 TT (see above).

Gearbox three stages and differential under the engine. Disc brakes are right next to this one.

Performances and consumption



After the first crash oil in 1974, Simca-Chrysler proved that low consumption and performances are compatible.
Panhard already did it some years before. The surprise came from the Matra-Simca Bagheera with only 6.44 L/100 for 109 Km/h average.
