I voted no - but it's not a completely merit-less idea. There are situations in all our lives where you have to put self-doubt aside and just do stuff - but it has a flip-side, there are many things that we can't do, and to have someone beat you over the head with this Yoda-ism would be very counter-productive, not to mention annoying!

The screenwriter who derived those words for Yoda was playing metaphysical word games. HIS apparent meaning was to not play around and test yourself by dipping one toe into the hypothetical waters, just dive in. Trying, according to some grammatical constructs, means testing or proving- and that could have been the intent in that little speech.

Yoda verbalized a basic motivation - don't fuck with it, just do it - in current terms; and that was germane only to the plot of the film. I don't agree that one can dictate that in real life. Trying, or attempting something you haven't previously done, IS doing. Don't let fancy verbal footwork run your life. So perhaps a better lifestyle suggestion would be to not waste your time worrying about it, messing with it or trying to calculate endless possible scenarios; just jump in and get involved with the actual doing.

Josh, with respect to you and your mom, she's using an expression in a fashion that makes sense only to a parent attempting to motivate their child. I would presume that she means to say, "don't be half-hearted and just make a feeble attempt, pour yourself into (whatever it is) with everything you've got."

To me, it's trite and relatively meaningless. Only you can decide if whatever you are doing is worth the energy. Of course, if a person uses the phrase "I'm trying" to mean that they are just barely getting by or not committing themselves, perhaps the expression (don't try just do) makes more sense.

My mother say a lot things i stop listen to her a long time ago,
when she really getting to me on the phone i hang up and act like my cell phone give out and call her back in the hopes to change what she talking about. or act like my getting a beep...
