DUST FOR BLOOD (2023)

Cliff, a traveling salesman drowning under the weight of providing for his family and the myth of the American dream, finds himself on a dangerous path after a chance encounter with Ricky, a colleague from a dark past. Imdb

Kit Harrington; Scott McNairy & Josh Lucas star in this gripping film-noir thriller. Performances were great and so was the cinematography the low-key pace was too low key for me and they could have cut maybe 10 mins of the first 30min without loosing anything from the tense set-up.
This film we watched yesterday. It should be an action movie --- well "should be". Perhaps I was a little bit too tired to watch. For me it was like a short film bloated to a long film.

A QUIET PLACE II (2020)

Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path. Imbd

Great performances from the main cast and good cinematography but I had 2 issues with it a) It was too noisy, there was too much soundtrack and that was one of the great aspects of the first one, just how silent it was which ramped up the tension and drew the audience in b) the storyline was a classic "The 1st movie made a heck of a lot of money - we gotta write a sequel".

The same thoughts I've had.

THE BELIEVER (2001)

A young Jewish man develops a fiercely anti-Semitic philosophy. Based on the factual story of a K.K.K. member in the 1960s who was revealed to be Jewish by a New York Times reporter. Imdb

This popped up on R&kutenTv. It stars a young Ryan Gosling, a well meaning movie with a powerful story, but I found it a bit clunky and clumsy at times

THEN CAME YOU (2018) a.k.a. DEPARTURES

A hypochondriac working as an airport baggage handler is forced to confront his fears when a British teenager with a terminal illness enlists him to help her carry out her eccentric bucket list. Imdb

This is also currently available on R@kutenTv and perked my interest as it stars Asa Butterfield. It was okay, funny at times but also heartwarming and melancholic. Asa is good as is his co-star Maisie Williams

AMAR AKBAR & TONY (2015)

Amar, Akbar & Tony follows the lives and loves of three childhood friends through twists and turns as the characters face sudden and unforeseen changes to their idealistic and trouble-free young lives. With hilarious and sometimes tragic consequences, the brotherly bond shared by the trio is forced to come to terms with some unexpected challenges. Interracial marriage, near fatal accidents and stints in prison will test old friendships and family values. A coming of age comedy drama showing the absurdities of life can also be the most amusing. Imdb

Nice idea, but not a great script and not great acting.

GODZILLA : MINUS ONE (2023)

Feeling as if he unfairly cheated death too many times, Shikishima, a surviving Kamikaze pilot is attacked on Odo Island along with many war plane engineers by a gargantuan monster. After the engineers die due to Shikishima failing to distract the monster, an overwhelming amount of guilt weighs on him, especially after a homeless woman and a baby move into his home when he returns. Shikishima, now on a personal mission, teams up with a large group of veterans to finally take down the monster known as Godzilla. Imdb

I enjoyed this as, unlike most G/z movies where you just get a lot of stamping; screaming;and building demolishing until the army blow him to bits this one concentrates more on the lives of those affected. It was made for an estimated $15million - which is an astonishingly small amount of money to spend on such a movie

IRENA'S VOW (2023)

Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman comes the remarkable story of Irena Gut, and the triumphs of the human spirit over devastating tragedy, as she risked her life to save a generation of Jews from the atrocities of the Holocaust. Imdb

Based on the true story..... how accurate it is and how much (if anything) has been added/altered for "cinematic reasons" I can't say. Eoither way it is an astonishing story and makes a compelling film. Great perfprmance from Sofie Neilisse

GHOSTBUSTERS : FROZEN EMPIRE (2024)

When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age. Imdb

Oh dear. I hit the off button at around 45mins and but nearly did earlier than that. A poor script; unfunny jokes and boring. And what the heck was James Acaster doing in this, he's a comedian and comedy panel show regular in the Uk, he's not an actor - and he proves that here.

There is one very scary moment - that moment when you think they might make another one.

ASPHALT CITY (2023)

Asphalt City follows Ollie Cross (Tye Sheridan), a young paramedic assigned to the NYC night shift with an uncompromising and seasoned partner Gene Rutkovsky (Sean Penn). The dark nights reveal a city in crisis; Rutkovsky guides Cross, as each 911 call is often dangerous and uncertain, putting their lives on the line every day to help others. Cross soon discovers firsthand the chaos and awe of a job that careens from harrowing to heartfelt, testing his relationship with Rutkovsky and the ethical ambiguity that can be the difference between life and death. (IMDb)

Oh wow this is an extraordinary film and I think not every one will like it. It is more like a documentary and shows two NYC paramedics during their night shifts. Here are no heroes who will help poor people as it is shown in many series. This is a blunt view into the grueling job of an paramedic in a hostile environment - really a shocking film. After 2 hours I've been like paralyzed.
This was the most shocking film for me since a very long time. I don't know if I can recommend this film - but nonetheless you should try it.

Pretty much what I thought whwn I watched it a few weeks back - gritty but grim. And I agree about it being closer to a "fly-on-the-wall" documentary than a scripted movie.

THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY (2023)

While stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop, a traveling salesman is thrust into a dire hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty-or cold, hard steel-to protect their bloodstained fortune. Imdb

This got many rave reviews but I got fed up and switched off after the big shoot-out. The writer/director was obviously going for a Tarantino Meets Coen Brothers but it didn't work for me.
