The Happy Sad on Netflix
Captain America: Winter Soldier
I was a kid in a candy store. If I were a kid my brain would explode with gooey glee, what with the magic that Hollywood can make with CGI. There were moments though when I got a little tired of 'action' as the be all and end all of flick. Where one measures the merit of a film by how much celery crunching, pipe banging action there is. The "Art" of the roller coaster ride.
As much as I liked this film, it is perfect for what it's designed to be, I couldn't help wish the thing did not move in such a linear line, sliding from point A to point B... But linear simplicity and destruction porn aside, there's so much to love here. Mostly because the film draws from such a rich history of stories. When one can pick and choose between hundreds of issues of comics to build a plot line, it is easier to pull together enough substance.
And of course, there was the momentary school girl "sigh" from me each time the camera does a grace shot of Chris Evans looking fine and tight in his civilian gear. Talk about product placement. The folks at UnderArmor had to be giddy as hell... He rocks that shit so fine. The 'V' cut of his body... The rack of his man pecs... Be still my heart.
There is so much Marvel history in this film. And it is treated with a great deal of respect. So much so, I don't mind the updates and alterations. You couldn't force me to read 'Ultimate' anything... so the notion that I'm alright with an Ultimate version of the Falcon, that's saying a lot. A very nice companion flick to the Avengers.
