Becoming Led Zeppelin 2026
You dont need to be a fan of heavy rock to enjoy this doc about four talented lads whose group became bigger than God during the nineteen seventies.
Amazing that three out of the four are still alive after that time of greater overindulgence than had ever been seen before.
John Bonham, RIP, will never be surpassed as the greatest rock drummer, to play any better is not humanly possible.

CHAOS (2005)

Two cops, a rookie and a grizzled vet, pursue an accomplished bank robber. Imdb

Feeling tired I wanted something that wasn't too mind-taxing and this dumb cop v. bank robber caper fitted the bill. It's one of several Jason Statham movies available in the UK on free movie streaming platforms. Ryan Phillipe plays the rookie. Wesley Snipes is in it too but look on the brightside, Sean Bean isn't in it.

CARRY ON (2024)

A mysterious traveler blackmails a young TSA agent into letting a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Eve flight. Imdb

Taron Egerton stars. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great.

THE ALTO KNIGHTS (2025)

Two of New York City's most notorious organized crime bosses vie for control of the city's streets. Once best friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals set them on a deadly collision course. Imdb

Robert De Niro plays both Frank & Vito, the feuding mob bosses. I hope he enjoyed this Barry Levenson movie - 'cos I thought the use of a voice over (De Niro again) and black and white newsreel footage made this drag even more. In summary - bored

BRING THEM DOWN (2024)

An Irish shepherding family thrust into battle on several fronts: internal strife, hostility within the family, rivalry with another farmer. Paternalism, heritage, and the generational trauma cycle through the cultural prism of Ireland.

Following Sundays movie about feuding mobsters I went for feuding sheep farmers. I grabbed this as it stars Barry Keoghan but even he can't save it. It's slow, dark, depressing and violent and covers animal mutilation too. Percussive soundtrack. Some short sections were in Gaelic and my copy had no subtitles but I could still follow the plot. More confusing was the skipping back and forth timewise. I looked at some reviews since watching it and one said it might appeal to people who thought The Banshees of Inisherin was too cheerful.

TRANSPORTER 3 (2008)

Frank Martin is forced to deliver Valentina, the kidnapped daughter of a Ukrainian government official, from Marseilles to Odessa on the Black Sea. En route, he has to contend with thugs who want to intercept Valentina's safe delivery. Imdb

I was tired and wanted a "dumb but fun" movie, nothing too mind-taxing and as the All4 streamer here in the UK had this Jason Staham movie available I decided it would do. I had seen the original Transporter and Transporter 2 and enjoyed them but this was pretty bad (even with a Luc Besson script) and I gave up on it at around 50 mins.

Teenage Zombies 1959
I defy anyone to come up with a worse movie than this. You have never seen such bad acting, even in vhs porn. A mad scientist, they are always mad in horror films, is working on a drug which will make every American into a mindless zombie, but how can they tell if it is working? The fight scene on the lab floor is the funniest bit, they aren't even trying to make it look real. Then there's the $5 gorilla costume. So scary I couldn't stop laughing. Great fun if you like unintended humour.

After a long time, again a movie which has wrecked me total!
WINDTALKERS (2002 - USA)
During World War II, when the Americans needed to find a secure method of communicating, they devised a code using the Navajo language. So Navajos were recruited to become what they call code talkers. They would be assigned to a unit and would communicate with other units using the code so that even though the enemy could listen, they couldn't understand what they were saying. And to ensure that the code is protected, men are assigned to protect it at all costs. One of these men is Joe Enders, a man who sustained an injury that can make him unfit for duty, but he manages to avoid it and is told of his duty and that the man he is supposed to protect is Ben Yahzee. Initially there is tension, but the two men learn to get along. (IMDb)

I/we have seen many movies about WW II, and many of them have been perfect, but this one was more than that. Two very different men came together, and one of them (Nicolas Cage) should protect the other, who is a Navajo and who mastered the famous Navajo code, which has never been cracked by the Japanese Army. A gripping story about the capture of the Island of Saipan in 1944! RECOMMENDED!

BOY KILLS WORLD (2024)... nottrailer due to actor age but here's a clip

A fever dream action film that follows Boy, a deaf person with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, he is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death. Imdb

So this action; comedy; gore fest stars Bill Skarsgård so that's always a good start. It comes across as a fucked up martial-arts fairy tale and looks like it's based on either a comic or video game but it's neither and was from an original scr[pt. Very funny in places; very violent and gory in places (not full on gore - we aren't talking PROJECT WOLF HUNTING levels) yeah one or two scenes maybe go on a bit and could/should have had a few minutes edited out but none the less I enjoyed this movie.

AN INNOCENT MAN (1989 - USA)

Jimmie Rainwood was minding his own business when two corrupt police officers (getting an address wrong) burst into his house, expecting to find a major drug dealer. Rainwood is shot, and the officers frame him as a drug dealer. Rainwood is convicted of drug dealing, based on the perjured evidence of a police informant. Thrown into a seedy jail, fighting to prove his innocence is difficult when he has to deal with the realities of prison life, where everyone claims they were framed. (IMDb)

A classic crime thriller with a young Tom Selleck (he was at that time 44) and let me say despite the age of this film it is a real thrilling story. It was a very good movie evening!

RILEY (2023)

The life of a disciplined athlete begins to unravel when his queer identity competes against the idea of who he was supposed to be.

A run of the mill coming of age movie. Good performance from the good-looking lead but ultimately a forgetable experience.

The Comedians 1967
Despite the title there is nothing to laugh about in Graham Greene's realistic story of the misery of life under Haiti's monstrously evil dictator for life Papadoc Duvalier. All the best actors are here, on the top of their game. Proof that the movie works is that Papadoc hated it, people like that are always allergic to the truth.

ASH (2024)

A woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events. Imdb

This presumably popped up in my recommendations as Iko Uwais is in it. Turns out he's not in it much and it might live up to the reviews saying how visually stunning but it's just boring

Again an oldie!
MARIE (1985 - USA)

In the mid-1970s, Marie Ragghianti left an abusive marriage and moved back home with her mother Virginia in Tennessee to eke out a better life for herself and her three young children. She waited tables while completing the degree requirements at Vanderbilt to obtain a B.A. in English and Psychology. She is unapologetic in asking college acquaintance Eddie Sisk for a job when he is appointed legal counsel for the just-elected governor Ray Blanton. In what he considers a win-win situation, Eddie offers Marie a job as the Extradition Officer for the state, which she accepts. From there, Marie quickly moves up the chain of command, first becoming the liaison to the Governor on Parole Board recommendations--the role which is meant to be a two-way street, where there is an understood quid pro quo in recommendations from the Board to the Governor, and from the Governor back to the Board--then becoming the Parole Board Chief. While working in these jobs, Marie becomes more and more uncomfortable in her working relationship with Eddie, and the Governor, who seems to be increasingly wanting parole for inmates who have no grounds to be paroled, and even worse, wanting full pardons for inmates who have no grounds to be pardoned. As Marie becomes more and more vocally opposed to what the Governor and Eddie want, she will learn how far they will go to silence and/or discredit her. In return, the Governor and Eddie learn that Marie will not take what is happening to her sitting down, especially as she believes she has done nothing wrong in carrying out the responsibilities of any of her state duties. (IMDb)

This again is a true story about a VERY courageous young women. A very haunting biopic which has a strong mojo until today!
Very recommended!

The Harder They fall 1956
T
his was Humphrey Bogart's last film. Cancer was killing him but he refused to stop smoking, drinking or working right until the very end. The theme is corruption in boxing, Bogey is full of contempt for the rich men who have ruined the sport. His performance would be outstanding at anytime but to work at this level when seriously ill show what an incredible star he was. The greatest.

SUNFLOWER ( 2023)

A late-teens Australian boy struggles to understand and embrace his sexuality as he comes of age in the working class suburbs on Melbourne's edge.

It's well acted and filmed and the plot has the "usual" elements of a coming-of-age movie, parents who don't understand; gay bashing; homophobic friends and eventual first love but I struggled to get involved with this.

DUNKIRK (2017)

Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II. Imdb

Given today's date and significance I decided to watch this excellent movie again. A gem from Christopher Nolan. Not much dialogue for the cast of Kenneth Branagh; Mark Ryland; Barry Keoghan; Fionn Whitehead; Tom Hardy; Cillian Murphy and Harry Styles to say as the wonderful cinematography tells the story with Hans Zimmer's soundtrack (with a little help from Elgar) setting the absorbing tense atmosphere.
