I originally passed on this thinking it was a German re-make of the Brad Pitt movie FURY but it turns out it's a different story. It has some great cinematography; action sequences and an enigmatic soundtrack. It's very tense in places and as to the ending well you will have to watch it and make up your own mind.

Just we have watched it now. It was a very exciting film from the start on. However, you had a scary feeling from the start.
And the ending - a little bit like THE LONG WALK.

BLUE STEEL (1990 -USA) as you say An Oldie but Goldie

On her first day on the job, NYPD officer Megan Turner, the lone officer on the scene, shoots and kills the perpetrator of a supermarket hold-up. Since no gun was found on the perpetrator's person or at the scene and none of the witnesses could corroborate Megan's story definitively that the perpetrator was indeed wielding a gun, she is suspended from active duty. She is quickly, albeit temporarily, reinstated to the position of homicide detective because the spent shell casing from the bullet used in a subsequent murder had her name carved on it. This murder ends up being only the first in a series. Working on the case with fellow homicide detective Nick Mann, Megan initially has no idea who in her life could be the murderer. In short order, the murderer does show himself to her. He is commodities trader Eugene Hunt, who she met immediately following her suspension and who she has since dated. He also implies to her that he was in the supermarket at the time of the hold-up, and that he fled the scene with the perpetrator's gun. The supermarket shooting caused a psychotic break in him, which resulted in among other things his obsession with her. However, beyond his implications only to her of being the murderer, Megan has no hard evidence that would stand up in a court of law that Eugene is indeed the murderer. Megan has to convince her colleagues, especially Nick, that she is telling the truth about Eugene, while stopping him from killing again and equally important stopping him from his continued psychological torture of her.(IMdB)

Wow! A tense gripping thriller - Riz Ahmed is great as are the other cast members. An edge-of-the-seat thriller with a WTF!? to keep the tension at the max.- Recommended!

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON (2019)

A Philadelphia police officer struggles with a lifelong obsession to track down a mysterious serial killer whose crimes defy explanation. Imdb

An interesting intriguing plot. However the movie could probably have done with a better director, and maybe some cast members too.

PILLION (2025)

A directionless man is swept off his feet when an enigmatic, impossibly handsome biker takes him on as his submissive. Imdb

So a gay themed dark comedy drama. Alexander Skarsgård stars as the leather-bound dominant queer biker gang member and Harry Melling as his new conquest. It's quite raunchy in places, even more surprising when you realise that although it is an A24 movie it is also a BBC/British Film Institute movie. There are tender sequences; some funny moments and some dark scenes. A rom-com it ain't - it's a relationship based on control.

I know not everyone will agree but for my personal taste it's a shame it wasn't younger brother Bill Skarsgård but I suppose a younger Dom wouldn't have worked.

RHINO (2025)

A dedicated wildlife ranger has protected his critically endangered black rhino population so well, that they have now run out of space. Hemmed in by ruthless bandits, the rhinos risk turning on each other. His team must launch an audacious plan to move 21 rhinos across the country to open a new safe haven. Imdb

A beautifully filmed doc. Not just about the moving of the rhinos but also about the effect that raiders and drought have on the local villagers. Tom Hardy narrates.

Kudos to these rangers who go about on foot knowing rhinos are close by. Rhinos are incredibly solid & powerful animals and sometimes have terrible tempers. I got pretty close to a male white rhino a few years back and have to admit it was an awesome but slightly scary time. Up to that point I had always thought of Land Rovers as being a solidly built tough vehicle but if he had decided to charge us it would have offered zero protection and probably been turned over.

NO OTHER CHOICE (2025)

After being unemployed for several years, a man devises a unique plan to secure a new job:.... eliminate his competition. Imdb

The algorithms pointed me to this dark Korean satirical comedy caper as it was directed & co-written by Park Chan-Wook who made OldBoy and stars the always excellent Lee Byung-hun and it's a bonkers plot; well acted and beautifully filmed.

THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH (1999)

After years of living alone, an eccentric black and white couple find real companionship and romance. Imdb

This popped up in the "trending" lists as apparently when made in 1992 it couldn't get released but it has been restored to 4K and is getting shown

A very quirky but heart warming melancholic comedy about finding purpose and companionship. Why quirky? Well James Earl Jones plays a man who daily wrestles with an invisible demon called Hank; Lynn Redgrave plays a woman who has recently fled San Francisco and her fiance is the ghost of composer Giacomo Puccini. They meet at the boarding house of eccentric landlady Margot Kidder who everyday water the weed she blames for killing her husband. The performances from the leads are superb but maybe the movie is too quirky for some viewers.

THE ORDER (2024)

A series of bank robberies and car heists frightens communities in the Pacific Northwest. A lone FBI agent believes that the crimes were not the work of financially motivated criminals but rather a group of dangerous domestic terrorists. Imdb

This is a really good crime drama based on true events. Great performances and great tight direction keep the tension going throughout. Recommended.

btw - Interesting that this movie follows the Hollywood mantra "Let's cast a Bit as the villain" by giving the role to Nicholas Hoult but also went with a "Let's cast a Brit as the hero cop" by giving the role to Jude Law... and they are both really good.

Fancy something a bit different? A slow paced wacko black & white 1995 movie from director Jim Jarmusch? It stars Johnny Depp; Gary Farmer & Lance Henriksen with cameos from such as John Hurt; Gabriel Byrne; Alfred Molina; Robert Mitchum; Billy Bob Thornton and Iggy Pop....

...oh and the soundtrack composed and played by Neil Young

An American actor in Tokyo struggling to find purpose lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese "rental family" agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. He rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the beauty of human connection. IMDB

I knew very little about this when I grabbed a copy, thinking it would turn out to be a mad-cap comedy. How wrong I was. This is a beautiful bittersweet drama that thankfully has some funny moments in it because they off set the more pogmiant moments. It's beautifully written, beautifully filmed and Brendan Foster is excellent, as are several other members of the Japanese cast.

A quick bit of research finds that the "rental family" concept is real and there are over 300 companies offering these services in Japan.

Be aware that this is a Japanese production and most of the Japanese cast speak Japanese for most but not all of the time, and Brendan Foster speaks quite a bit in Japanese too. The version I watched had hard-coded subtitles in english for the Japanese dialogue so if english or japanese is not your first language take care when you get a copy that the subtitles or dubbing will work for you. A copy with German; Spanish; French etc subtitles showing over the top of english subtitles would not be watchable.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD (2008)

The story of two outlaws and a bounty hunter in 1940s Manchuria and their rivalry to possess a treasure map while being pursued by the Japanese army and Chinese bandits. Imdb

In between making the excellent I SAW THE DEVIL and BITTERSWEET LIFE the duo of writer/director Kiim Jee-woon and the always watchable Lee Byung-hun made this fun filled action movie. To say it is different from the other 2 collaborations would be an understatement. A Korean cinema version of a spaghetti western...... eastern western maybe? Madcap; funny; bonkers plot but a 2hr 20mins total blast and very entertaining.

THE LAST VIKING (2025)

What the hell did I just watch? is a typical reaction to an Anders Thomas Jensen who gave us the RIDES OF JUSTICE and the utterly wacko MEN AND CHICKENS and for this mix of dark satirical comedy; absurdist mayhem; brotherly love; brutal violence and bonkers story he teams up with his regulars the excellent Mads Mikkelsen and Nicolaj Lie Kaas.

I wonder what they put in the water in Denmark?

WRECKING CREW (2026) .. no trailer due to actor age but here's a clip from early on

Estranged half-brothers Jonny and James reunite after their father's mysterious death. As they search for the truth, buried secrets reveal a conspiracy threatening to tear their family apart. Imdb

This stars David Bautista and Jason Momoa and the set up is for a buddy/brothers action comedy. Dumb but fun? Well I guess so. Having read several reviews since watching it seems like most people enjoyed it more than I did ... but I'm not much of a Jason Momoa fan which doesn't help. Friday night; pizza and a few beers and switch your brain off- this will do fine for that.

KING OF NEW YORK (1990)

A drug kingpin is released from prison and seeks to take total control of the criminal underworld in order to give back to the community. Imdb

This solid and gritty gangster movie from 35 years back has a cracking performance from Christopher Walken and able support from Laurence Fishbourne; David Caruso; Wesley Snipes and Steve Buscemi.

THE PLAGUE (2025)... no trailer due to actor ages

A socially awkward tween endures the ruthless hierarchy at a water polo camp, his anxiety spiralling into psychological turmoil over the summer. Imdb

This very disturbing, psychological looks at bullying and adolescent angst. The pace and narrative looses it's way at times but it's well acted by the predominantly young cast and has some great cinematography to go with the soundtrack.

Definitely NOT a friday night; beer & pizza movie.
