Well back in the late 80's and 90's, I can't tell you how many remotes, or VCRs for that matter I went through because the rewind and fast forward stopped working.

Hell yes I do... My cable provider is all digital and the converter box only works by remote, no external buttons at all...

Since the TVs in my house are basically the same model, the only change is the screen size, the remotes are interchangeable, so if one doesn't work there are always the others...

My kids and Alex destroy all remote... they play foot, sit on them, grease them, let the battery melt in them... so there's no point getting mad I know they'll get destroy same as your dog LOL... I should hire a human remote... walk to the TV to change channel... so everything I said earlier would not happen since I'll give him/her a machine gun with permission to shoot at will :rofl:
